Selflessly Self-involved
This won't be the first time the idea has come up, but in light of the recent "which camera/lens" threads I thought I'd propose.
On the other forum I frequent, Lush Longboards, every week someone would make a new thread on what board was right for them. Serious downhill, or cruising to the shops, or whatever. So in the end a buyer's guide was finally written up an made a Sticky. Now the basic questions are answered there, and no more repeating ourselves weekly.
I think the info people give here is great, but a concise list of the more favourable cameras may help.
I realise there are LOADS. The thread would become a book in itself (yes yes, Rangefinder for £20 in all good bookshops), so maybe keep it simple and down to the point. As impartial as possible.
Here's the plan if people are up for it:
Carry-around manual
Auto-something
Expensive ZI/Leica
Value Bessa
Fixed Lens
FSU's and cheaper
MF/LF/Vintage
Digital
Maybe a little pro's and con's for each section with a list of a few cameras that are the more popular. And most importantly, links!! Cameraquest has a lot of info, as do many other sites, as does RFF in the threads. We could seperate into Contax/LTM/M/Fixed-lens/etc, or have that in brackets with each camera, then at the bottom of the thread have a short paragraph on the each lens mount.
If it ever goes through, then we could also do the lens one, but that's even more difficulty 😀
Most of the sections won't need changing unless something happens to the camera market, since the hierarchy within the section is hardly going to change when most cameras are older than me!!
If you all think it's a good idea to try and make a post, preferably something that doesnt stretch more than a couple pages then I'm up for compiling it.
Another thought, since we have each section on RFF already, maybe a buyer's guide for each section (since some are FSU-comrades, and some are leicaphiles etc), that is maybe a page of info, then have a single list here in the main forum with the links to each seperate topic. Would that work better do you think??
I know you all have a lot of love to give, so maybe this project could bring out a few dark horses and underdogs alongside the more outspoken people? 🙂
If you think this idea is crap then say so, if you think we could make it work within a 7 day period (or 10 days) that would be great. If people already have links and info they want to contribute then maybe throw it in a text file, and attach it to a post, so I can download it all and compile it in a single folder. Again, we could have a txt/pdf file in the members only.
