Buyers paying Paypal fees?

Up until about 15 years ago I owned a retail store. At that time my rent was 2500, electric was about 900, phone about 200, gas about 400, plus insurance, rent tax, and tons of other expenses. And that was 15 years ago. I think that people who sell on e-bay are getting a big consumer base with very little overhead.

True but....................

True but....................

This is true but if you remember back to your business days, every penny of the cost of doing business, phone electricity, rent, etc, had to be rolled into the price of the goods you were selling. I've had my own commercial studio for 22 years and I have to price my work to cover insurance, electricity, gas, new equipment, supplies & etc. Those who do not understand this will not stay in business for long. All of my expenses are passed to the customer and I absorb none. I've seen many tallented photographers come and go because they thought they could price their work so no one would come to me, the high priced guy. None are still in business around my town. Ebay is nothing but a business platform for each seller. In my view it's terribly unfair for ebay to dictate the rules of selling when they wouldn't absorb these same costs themselves. Ebay like all succesfull business absorbs no costs, it's passed to you and me.

Right Stu, they should stop bitchin' about Paypal fees and be thankful that they don't have to deal with shoplifters, roof leaks and backed up toilets.

If ebay is the storefront your home is the warehouse. Expenses at the warehouse must be factored into the price too. There are many mom and pop businesses that only sell on ebay. The IRS even recognises the mom and pop business and allows a decuction for space, utilities, insurance, car, gasoline & etc. Even if you run a business from your home and sell through ebay there is real cost involved in conducting that business that must be passed on. If you don't understand this then you should never open your own business. This is one of the reasons such a high percentage of businesses fail.

Here's why this Buyer NEVER would pay a Seller's PayPal fees.

Tonight I reversed payment on an eBay purchase made via PayPal.

I use a special web-based credit card from my bank when I buy via PayPal.

Now don't get me wrong - I think this Seller did indeed ship the item as he claims.

But he used FedEx Ground - which is the only delivery service known to man that is worse than UPS! FedEx Ground is the old Railway Express. FedEx made a big mistake in buying it cheap out of bankruptcy - thinking it would make them competitve in the lower cost ground shipment biz versus UPS!

They bought a disaster. It was an old-line failure of a company.

Well, seller's good intentions aside - I have NOT received the item.

I called my CC-company to reverse charges and, guess what, they are now so used to this situation that they quickly and without question recorded the charge reversal (i.e. credit to me).

They "knew" the cost of the item from what I had paid. I love using my CC on PP and will NEVER let a seller make me pay HIS/HER fees!

😀

You're right, George. Fedex ground is a disaster. Once the item reaches the destination terminal, they use local carriers to make final delivery. That's where the system breaks down. Some of these guys are fly-by-night outfits -very unfedex like and very unprofessional.

1. ebay/paypal is making tons of money, they have driven bidpay out of biz now, and there are no competitors in sight, save Western Union perhaps.

2. but paypal does provide some sort of escrow for seller/buyer, you have at least some sort of middleman.

3. paypal is not expensive, because international money order or bank transfer all cost you money, and they are as smooth as paypal.

4. you can always send cash in a registered letter, but, very risky.

That sounds like a pretty good reason not to accept Paypal for payment.

Well, perhaps, except there are some of us buyers who will only bid on auctions that take PayPal.

Also, when I sell, I refuse all bids from bidders w/o a PP account (eBay provides a "screen" to do this) and only take PP for payment.

It's just a transaction-based payment service and when I sell, I am willing to pay for it.

Hi, I basically agree with you, but it makes me nervous that a buyer could reverse a payment so easily. It seems to make a seller very vulnerable - ?

I haven't sold on eBay in years but I will need to soon. Paypal is really the only choice for overseas bidders.

All the buyer has to do is twitch and PayPal will seize the money back from the seller's account.

At that point, the seller is considered guilty until he/she can convince the nameless drones at PayPal that he/she is innocent.

I don't like it, but I use it because the convenience outweighs the problems... at least for now. Of course, this begs the question, if PayPal is so bad, why has not a company come along to steal their customers away? I don't have any sort of answer for that.
