What do you think of adding a feature to the Gallery

Where members are able to offer to buy prints ?

The offer could be X amount for X size, signed and dated by the photog?

The photog would be free to accept or turn down the offer. It would be up to them to work out the details between them.

ideas ?

I could see this being a popular facility amongst gallery users here. I suppose a lot will depend upon the details but we buy and sell gear without too many issues. Perhaps print quality would be the greatest barrier to success.

I like the idea but I agree that the quality of the print itself may be an issue ... but then again that applies to anything we buy online, some good some not so good.

As it stands now if someone particularly likes something they see in the gallery they're free to contact the poster via PM and ask the question.

One spin off from this would be raisng the bar a little in the gallery itself as posting images that are poorly presented would get you nowhere fast in this scenario.

I support the idea. Maybe I would publish more images having the incentive to sell once something.

Good point with a somehow standardized print quality description.

levels of print (quality) could be advertised...maybe by the nature of how the print was created...i.e. -

hand made, silver print
lab made, silver print
lab made, digital print
hand made digital

I see that you have the level of print quality in the correct order. 😉

Here's a helpful suggestion: With darkroom prints, RC or FB should be declared.

I believe the premise is that a customer would contact the photographer and ask for a print, which is different than a photographer announcing prints for sale. The latter is not a new concept, in fact it's as common as air.

The former would serve the purpose of informing those who do this only as a hobby (with no anticipation of selling anything) that, indeed, there is a market for their prints even if it's only a market of one.

But (sigh) if it simply turned into yet another marketing venue for galleys, I'd disapprove. There are enough of them clogging the system.

we should be able to do it.

I'm thinking the buyer would state from the start
size of print
type of print
(and other details)
and the minimum price should be established in the software

ie
if the minimum price for a hand printed 8x10 might be $40 + shipping
that would be the minimum offer
BUT the buyer or the photog could up the price
it would be mutually negotiable.
not everyone would accept the minimum print price
others would be happy to make extra income

Hi Stephen,

I like the general idea here, but I'm not sure why a buyer would be motivated to name a price above the minimum offer amount. A higher price would imply that they want the print more than another potential buyer, like in an auction. The trouble is, what is the likelihood of multiple offers at the same time for a single print?

Maybe the reverse would work? Setting a desired price and opening up the chance for lower offers if the buyer saw fit.

Of course, just placing an informative ad about the piece and setting a price is the simplest method. Price negotiations can take place between forum members, just as they do for any other gear.

I personally have a couple prints up in the classifieds right now that I'd love to sell (to fund more printing!) I tried to attach a modest price, so now that I've shown my cards so to speak, I don't think someone will come and offer more.

Just some musings to further the discussion.. I hope to hear others' thoughts as well.

I could certainly provide the ability for someone to check off a few pre defined option sin a form and submit it to the photographer so they ca start communicating on the possibility of an exchange.

I print my own, on an Epson R1900 on Ilford Gallerie Pearl paper, what would that qualify as?

sure,

it will be between the buyer and seller to negotiate all the details

including price, type of print, archival or not, signed or not, etc

obviously every offer will not result in a sale,
but its a chance for print collectors to add to their walls
and photogs to make a few $$ to help satisfy GAS

Stephen

I just placed a classified add offering a print of any photo in my gallery. I stated my print type and set my price. Let me know what you think.

Just a suggestion. How about putting links to your gallery pages in the ad? That'll help mobile device users get to your pictures faster.

Thanks for the suggestion, it's already done. I am surprised to have 273 views in about the first 18 hours.

I think Stephen's idea to make this a part of the gallery itself is the best solution. I just wanted to put in my 2 cents worth by placing the classified add showing how I would sell a print to other members.

This would also be a great way to implement print exchanges. Lots of possibilities. Can we get a poll going or maybe some more feedback?

The gallery software will be modified to encourage offers for prints. Photogs and buyers will be free to work out the deal ... or not.

Until then,

IF YOU SEE AN IMAGE IN THE GALLERY YOU WANT ON YOUR WALL,
MAKE AN OFFER!
