Buying R-D1 from Matsuiyastore

I'm finally ready to take the plunge and get an R-D1 or R-D1s from Matsuiyastore - based on the number of positive recommendations on this forum. Question for those that have used this vendor: has anyone had any issues with the camera arriving with skewed framelines or the rangefinder out of alignment? Sad to say I'm going to have to sell off my Mamiya 7 and Contax G2 to do this - both awesome cameras but I'm just not using them and the lure of a DRF is just too great (can't afford the M8 anyway). Thanks for you answers.

My experience with all CV manufactured rangefinders, whether the Epson R-D1 or the Bessas, is that they all arrive with their view finders at least a little out of alignment. Don't ask me why - I don't know. I always set aside some money to have an adjustment done locally.

I bought both a R-D1s and a Zeiss 35mm lens from them.
Shipping was super fast and items were in excellent condition.
I would have no problem buying from them again.

I think I can get them somewhat cheaper in Japan (but again I am not there the options are limited).

My 3rd and latest RD1s came new from Matsuiyastore and was a hair off on the vertical alignment, very likely due to shipping.

DAG aligns these perfectly and reasonably, so I saw no reason for it to go back to Japan.

I'm very pleased with it. My first photo was #3 on the odometer and no other signs of use, so I'm guessing the alignment may have been off at the factory or happened during transit.

Don ended up cementing some things so I feel it is probably better than new as far as stability now.

Hi Bernard. I recently purchased an R-D1s from Matsuiyastore via eBay. This was my very first purchase on eBay so I was extremely nervous about spending so much money. I had an R-D1 and sold it to a forum member a while back. Missed the camera so much I searched high and low for another. The camera arrived in FL within 5 days of purchase and in excellent condition. I was afraid the rangefinder alignment might be off, but it was only slightly off (vertical). No different from the first one I had and I don't feel the need to have it adjusted just yet. I give Matsuiyastore 5 stars. By the way, I paid $2069 US for a new R-D1s. It was in the original box and came with an English printed manual and all accessories. You can't really tell the difference between a US version of this camera vs a Japanese version... with the exception of the US Epson exceptional packaging. I would definitely buy from Matsuiyastore again. Their exterior packaging was great.

Thanks for all your answers. Sounds like I might expect slight misalignment but nothing to drive me crazy right away.

Also, curious if anyone buying from them in the US has had to pay any import fees (I'm in Atlanta, GA)?

I got my R-D1s and 35/2.5 PII Color Skopar from Matsuiyastore a while back. Packaging was good, and there were no problems with the rangefinder alignment.

I haven't ordered any rangefinder equipment, so I can't comment on the alignment issue, but I have purchased a second hand lens from Matsuiyastore and their service is excellent. Packaging was first class and they sent it very quickly. Highly recommended.

I did not have to pay any import duties when the packaged arrived in Spain, which I normally have to with any purchases I make in the United States, even on second hand equipment. The issue of import duties seems more like a lotery to me. Some packages pass without any problem, other packages don't. If you can have it marked as 'gift', you should be ok.

Not always, as you said spanish customs are a lotery... I've received parcels with two cams and lenses marked as photog. equipment without paing taxes... I've had to pay taxes for a book :-( and lastly for a Konica hexar marked as gift

There shouldn't be duty on items for personal use. However if the item is valued more than $2000 US, it may be held up in customs for "formal entry". It has become a more frequent occurance. This could be as little as a signed letter from you stating that the item is not for commercial use, etc... I had a few item held up in customs for a few days, and luckily never had to go through a broker to arrange for formal entry.

I more than agree with all the positive that was said about Matsuiyastore. I tried to get R-D1s locally, but no one was simply able to deliver it, Epson Europe simply didn't have them. After lot of hesitation I started to deal with Matsuiyastore. The guy there, Noriaki, is extremely polite and nice and responds very quickly. I was also bit nervous about sending $2200 somewhere on the other side of the globe, but I checked the feedback on eBay and saw that people are buying even more expensive equipment from him. The transaction itself went like clockwork and I got the camera in some 5 days from Japan. Another good thing is that he ships the goods though EMS and I never had to pay any import duties and VAT, when I got something delivered via EMS (with FedEx it was always). Wish you good luck and crossing fingers.

I'm just playing for the second day with a new R-D1s sent by Mr Nokiaki from Matsuiyastore. I meesed up the first order, so I communicated with him, he promptly reacted and placed another one. In less than a week my new new toy arrived. I received also EMS tracking number so I could see where it is. No custom duties in the Czech Republic. I can only recommend services by Mr Noriaki from Matsuiyastore.

Since I'm entirely new to the rangefinder world, I'm getting used to it and cannot really comment on alignment, etc. It seems a little bit misaligned horizontally. Generally being a heavy dslr user, all seems a little bit strange ;-)
