BW film with a clear base? Not pinkish.

Hey fellow Addicts,

Can someone recommend a normal bw negativ that comes with a clear base?

I would like try my ide of producing bw slides using my slide copier.

Gigabitfilm has an absolute clear base, Rollei R3 is clear too, but with a very light grey cast.

That's only because there's (almost) no anti-halation dye to wash out. The same goes for Gigabit. Lucky is probably a good choice under controlled lighting and cheap!

Did you know you can simply develop your B&W film as a positive? If having a B&W slide is what you're after, you have a couple of options:

1) Use the DR5 service (http://www.dr5.com)

2) Process the film yourself to produce a positive image. Kodak makes a direct reversal kit for T-MAX film:

A lot of the older 'darkroom' books also contain formulae for taking any B&W neg film to a positive instead. I'm sure some work better than others, but I've never tried any of them.

I undestand the route you are pursuing, and a light gray base is not bad at all for "positives"... been there. I used a bellows/copy pod and a light table as my "BW slide maker"

The chinese films (Lucky and such) have clear bases, and so I understand the microfilm based ones.
Foma has a light bluish tint which is non intrusive IMHO as well, and the gray base of the EFKES may be good enough.

I used to use AGFA APX to obtain "negatives" in the print I guess the base color was not an issue.
And Kodak HCF (medical purposes) when making slides for presentations.

Here's the skinny on a bunch of B&W slide-making methods (from my site):

The standard recommendation for copying negs to make slides is to use Kodak 5302 film (a slow, blue-sensitive, clear-base film used for making motion picture positive "prints" from negative film) It comes in 100' bulk rolls but can be really hard to find -- but it works very well for the purpose. (I've used it, and the slides are great.) Tech Pan used to be another common suggestion. In any case, you'll need to develop to a pretty high contrast (paper developer works well for this.)

Wow is right! What's it made of, gold dust?

Well, there is always the old-fasioned method of creating B&W reversals from standard B&W chemistry (more or less). I have a bunch of recipes in my various ancient darkroom chemistry books, if you like I can hunt them up and post them.

If the color of the base is a concern, stay well away from NeoPurple. I'm still not quite sure I'm washing it enough, but it seems to be the base itself.

How to get hold of these chemicals?

It seems that I will go along the Ilford way of reversal processing adjusted to my available films and chemicals just because the process is well documented by Ilford.

However, I have no idea where I could buy (in London) these chemicals:

sodium thiosulphate

potassium permanganate

sulphuric acid

sodium or potassium metabisulphite

These all are mentioned in the Ilford reversal processing manual.

Look under chemicals. You will find a ready-made Speedibrews reversal kit at £6 for 4 35mm rolls or all the raw chemicals you need. They are behind Blackfriars Road and open Monday-Friday.

They are always my first stop for traditional materials.
