Well this really is not specifically an M8 post but I tend to hang out here.
I unfortunately have a prolapsed cervical disc which is getting fixed hopefully next week. I will not be able to carry anything heavy for quite some time.
I am therefore going to cash my DSLR outfit and that leaves me with the M7 and a 50 'cron.

I can probably afford a couple of extra Leica lenses. I do not generally shoot longer than 50mm but am thinking of a couple of wider lenses for general shooting/lanscapes. In terms of wide (fixed focal length) there is the 21 2.8 or the new 18mm. Then id probably fill the gap with a 35. is the 1.4 significantly better than the f2. Any other thoughts?

Well I pair my M8 with a Panasonic G1. This gives me a very light dSLR type camera which can share my Leica M fit lenses via an adaptor. The articulated screen of the G1 is very useful for those difficult low level shots, macro and tele work which the M8 isn't good at.

How about an M8(.2) with 35mm (which is 46mm at M8) as 2nd camera? I think the quality is quite superior to other digital RF (except of FF M9) ...

The disc situation sounds as if its been troublesome for some time. Just hope that next week does come and things aren't put off, and put off and put off!!
Not sure I understand your thinking but then I rarely understan my own either. If weight is to be a problem why not have something even lighter - go on, get yourself a very simple camera. How about an Olympus Trip - great lens, often surprisingly good results, and something very different from your present kit. Give you something to think about and smile about too. Do something very different.

Its not so much the weight of a single item but the whole effect of a bag full of DSLR kit. I really love my D700 outfit but I am realistic and i suppose i could put it away for a few months and see how I go.

I've had a back problem for many years Richard so I sympathise. I too switched to RF shooting, originally with Contax G gear, now shooting digi with Epson RD1.

Well - two more advices 😉
- a Mamiya 7 as a film MF (even less heavy than the M7!) - or, just for "the special situation", where one may wish a small digital camera: Leica X1 or Sigma DP (1s or 2).
I must admit, when going around with my M7 (BW film) I use to take my DP2 with me, just to be prepared for a colored motive or a shoot with higher ISO.

Mamiya 7 is awesome but does not focus that close and appertures f4+ a bit boring! Is it really lighter than an M7??
I always have used my M7 for portraits and the D700 more for landscapes (the 14-24 is a major piece of glass). I am really thinking about wide anlge options for the M7. I am still a bit ambivalent about digital and do a lot of black and white printing. I have really got that workflow spot on now so thats where I am currently heading!
