C-41 film choice for push processing (800 pushed to 1600 or more)

Hello all!

I was wondering what the better film would be for pushed exposures. I normally use NPZ, and have never tried Press 800. I am looking to push to 1600 – 2000 range. I prefer fine grain and as little color shift as possible.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

This would mainly be for street photography, primary subject: people.

I use NPZ pushed two and rated at EI 1600. It's not very forgiving in terms of exposure. Portra 800 pushes quite well also - I've tried it pushed one and rated at EI 1250. I haven't tried it pushed two.

One question: can you push develop the stuff? I though it couldn't be done.

Or are you guys talking about taking advantage of the latitude of the stuff?

BTW, I do have a propack of Portra 400 somewhere. Can I expose it at, say, 800 and still get decent exposures?
 
Yes you can push develope C41:)

I just dropped of three rolls of Portra 160 exposed at 320. Some labs will push it some wont.
 
Some C-41 films can be pushed but I don't know which ones. But most C-41 films develop out with normal developing. Leaving them in the developer longer doesn't accomplish anything.

Kodak include push one and two information in their literature for Portra 800 but not for the other Portra films. Fuji aren't as forthcoming with information as Kodak, but NPZ is definitely pushable - and I do mean push development, not underexposure followed by normal development.

Unless you want a certain effect, it probably isn't worth pushing slower films one stop - just underexpose them if you have to, and exploit their amazing latitude. That's what I'd do with Portra 400 - but it all depends on what you want and what the subject is.
