If you have any questions, please contact me via email or the Arts Council at 919-736-3300.

I found out about this through my photography club, and thought I'd pass it along. I know some of us are in NC and some may wish to participate if they have prints they'd like to display and sell. Seems to be open to all, might be a good way to potentially raise some cash.

Just FYI, as I have no connection with the Arts Council of Wayne County.

Best Regards,

Cool! Might have to find out some more info about this. It tempts me some I admit. And I wouldn't have to worry about people here in my home town pointing me out as "That's the guy who thought he could sell those awful photos."
The time frame is abit tight and the council might not want photos mailed to them but I may give them a call.

Bill, thanks for the HU.

I was tempted too but declined when I read the prints need to be sale-ready and framed. I could never pull that off this fast and have them sent from Europe in time. Too bad, really. It would have been a nice opportunity.

I am told that they are planning to do it again in the coming year. The Council was originally not impressed with the thought that photography was art (!) and was somewhat unwilling to open their galleries to photographs as well as paintings. They have a new director who feels differently. He is the one who persuaded the city of Goldsboro to bring out the fire department, shut down the main street, put up lights, and bring in models for our recent photo shoot. Those results are going to be exhibited in the form of a contest in December. The board of directors were impressed with the turnout and the publicity and the positive feedback - they're changing their attitudes and their policies.

For me, it seems like a good time to get my work out there - and I thought I'd pass that along to anyone who wanted to partake as well. I hope to sell a few pieces, and if not, at least get myself more used to putting my work out there for sale.

I will attempt to stay plugged in and will post when they announce that they're doing this again - but hopefully in a more timely manner next time. Sorry the timeframe was so short this time.

My city council, is good on photography too.

They have contests in which they announce the theme and a date beforehand, then the tourism office hands out film on the day. One 135/24 100ASA each. We return the film undeveloped by the following morning, and go to the exhibition (results) about a month later.

Nice format because we all get to take photos on the same day in the same light.

Last year some 12 year old kid won. Nice picture too.

That's one heck of an idea!

BUMP!

And I wanted to say - I heard from the director of the Wayne County Arts Council, and they were startled (and pleased) to find that they are getting entries from all over the USA and Germany as well - they had no idea that their 'little' exhibition would attract such attention. As a result, the director has arranged for the photos to be displayed alongside "The Creation" series by Ernst Haas; three works by Annie Liebovitz and the Yousef Karsh portrait of Ernest Hemingway.

This is a 'big deal' for a small town (Goldsboro) in North Carolina, and everyone is excited.

Entries close on January 6, and the opening reception is January 13. I don't think I will have an entry, as I have completely run out of time and money over the holidays, but I will be there for the reception. I am eager to see the work submitted from outside of Goldsboro, NC - I wonder if any of it came from any RFF readers? 😀 😀 😀

Anyway, just wanted to give this a bump and to say 'thanks' to anyone here on RFF who sent in a entry to the exhibit. The Arts Council is surprised and pleased with the turnout, and the local newspaper is going to do a story on it, so that's all a good deal for a small town trying to support the photographic arts - everybody wins!

Bill,
You going to be at the opening for this I hope?
I was really tempted about this but decided not to send them anything this time for a couple of reasons: the biggest was that I'm not making silver prints now and I'm not willing to sell ink-jet prints. I'm happy to give to my friends and family nicely framed digital prints but my own expectations won't let me ask anyone for $ for them.
Thanks again for the heads up and please let us know if/when the arts council does it again!

Rob,

My wife and I will be there on Friday for the Opening Reception. I just hear that there were 50 entries and a total of over 150 photos entered, plus one of the collectors has opened his archives and is displaying some truly rare prints by some greats. For Goldsboro, NC, this is Big Stuff.

I have entered a couple of matted and framed 8x10's, sensibly priced at just $75 USD, we'll see how they do. It might be a good investment, they'll be worth so much more when I'm famous, and even more when they find me floating in a bathtub in France five years from now.

Or not. But you know, whatever.

Anyway, the Arts Council is very pleased - I am told that this will be happening again, and I'll post if anyone is interested.

Best Regards,

Bill Mattocks
