Camera Bags

They look kind of expensive and they probably are. (Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with people spending big bucks on stuff like bags, it's just that such bags attract the wrong sort of people ;) .) How quickly could you get one to look scruffy? I'm currently working on trying to make a fairly new Domke clone look bad and I'm having a hard time doing it.

I looked into these before I bought my Domke bags. Without personally inspecting either, I like these better than the Billinghams from what I can see. They ARE expensive; I wish I could have afforded them, as I loved the design, the craftsmanship and the apparent workmanship. And anyone who drops out of the corporate life and can make a living in Provence has my undying admiration!

I found a flight bag at wal-mart, little smaller than an average duffle. I had access to a LARGE supply of wrestling mat foam which I used to cut out around the camera. I'm fixing to redo it now that I have rear lens and body caps - I think I should be able to get 3 or 4 lenses in a bag this size.

Hmmmm! I think I'll stick with my Fogg bag ;)

That's fine, I was addressing Peter's post more specifically. They dont make a whole lot of camera bags big enough to hold an RB67, and Mamiya thinks it should be priced as if you paid $4k for the camera. But it's nondescript, strong, large enough to hold accessories, and is padded enough to withstand moderate impact.

Looking at the web site - I dont trust people who wont list prices up front. I get the idea they want to send a salesperson down to discuss my needs in a camera bag over a $60 steak dinner and a $100 bottle of wine.

My first post here. Been reading for long but never post.

I've been searching for a good bag for a long time. Checked the Billingham, the Domke, the Lowes, etc but never been satisfied with. They are big, expensive and most of all they tell everyone "Hey there is a camera inside!" (I prefer people thinking I'm carrying a book, a cell phone and a bottle of water.)

The bag I choose finally is a simple DJ Shoulder Bag #1427 from Manhattan Portage and two Domke protective wraps. Non-descript, tough, not photo-specific. I easily carry my M6 and two lenses, mini-tripod, a small raincoat and films. The bag opens quickly and nobody notice what is inside. If not in NewYork thery are hard to find except maybe in dj related stores. I bought mine in Montreal and found it is the perfect size.

$3.50, I think. I put a piece of leather in the inside and it holds and pads a rangefinder very well.

Can't beat army surplus, and for sure NO ONE thinks you are walking around with thousands of dollars of equiptment in an old beater like that.

I always seem to fall out of love with any bag I get - far too quickly as well! :bang:

Having said that, I just got hold of an Eagle Creek "Protect-it" Excursion bag, which is just the right size for carrying an M (or similar size body) with two to three lenses, or two bodies with a lens mounted on each. Also has space for film, notebooks, meter etc in the front. It can be used as either a shoulder or a waist bag.

The bag is now discontinued sadly. I got mine from Sierra Trading Post, though Campmor have it listed too (but they don't do international shipping).
