If the op wants to get onto the contemporary treadmill as a PJ it would be more akin to learning the skills of blogging and communication as much as being able to make a great photograph. Modern photo editors need the extra incentive to notice you as opposed to in my day when you basically could get away with 'I took a good topical photograph, do you want it?'.
