camera on the fly

Not sure where to post this, so please move if not appropriate. I am looking for a good, compact point and shoot to take with me fly fishing. I have always used a Leica, so lens quality is foremost. I would also like a relatively fast aperture (F/2.8 minimum) and good seals to keep out the damp. A zoom is not really important. But I am more concerned about the optical zoom rather than the digital zoom. Any suggestions (not limited to Fuji) will be appreciated.

Well, the thing that comes straight to mind is a specialist weather proofed camera. If you want a Leica lens, perhaps the LUMIX® Digital Camera DMC-FT5?

The only Fuji x tran sensor camera that I can remember being advertised as weatherproof is the new xt1 along w/ the upcoming 18-135. I don't believe that the x100s, x20, or xq1 were advertised as weatherproof, but I could be wrong.

I think they have may have a normal Bayer type sensor camera that is considered weatherproof, but I really don't keep track of that.

Alternative are
- Nikon One aw1
-- 1 inch sensor
-- csc
-- two lenses that are waterproof like the camera body down to something like 30 meters if I remember right.

- Olympus omd em5 is weatherproof
-- m43 sensor
-- the 12-50 kit lens or the Panasonic 12-35 are supposed to be weatherproof

Otherwise I think something like a normal p&s Bayer sensor camera like the Panasonic ft series would be the way to go as well...

I have a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W50 which is an older 6 MP P&S. My daughters got it for me, along with a plastic cover that wouldn't be wise to go scuba diving with, but should survive a shallow dunking and quick recovery. I am sure you could get a larger MP P&S and a similar case. I think the problem you will have is getting a constant f/2.8 lens. Mine has a Zeiss Vario Tessar f/2.8-5.2/6.3-18.9,

If "seals to keep out the damp" means weatherproof, I think the Olympus OM-D EM-5 is as compact as you're going to get. If it needs to be smaller than that, RX100 I or II would be my suggestion but it's not weatherproof. EDIT: Or maybe the new Ricoh GR.

If it is a p&s in the Fuji xtran line, I would say x20 right now because it has a good zoom and ovf or the x100s, but these are not considered to be weatherproof.

Sure, but #3 was in response to #2 which suggested that.

If you're planning to take the camera with you while you stand in the water I'd recommend something more than just weatherproof. Gary's suggestion of an AW1 is a good choice, it's probably the best waterproof P&S I can think of.

Otherwise an RX100 (II), Nikon V1, Fuji X20, etc. You could get a Leica P&S but they're all rebadged Panasonics.

I think you can't go wrong with either the Canon Powershot S110 or the S120.

Check this web page at dpreview. Its their annual recommendation list of weatherproof cameras. I've always heard good things about the Olympus 'tough' cameras, and there's one on this list that has an f2.0 lens!

Thanks all, I have some reading to do. As far as the "seals"... I guess I could have been more specific, but since I am looking to take it fly fishing with me I want something that can withstand wet hands, or the occasional small splash. I realize this isn't the right forum since I am essentially looking for a point and shoot. Jamie, thanks for the link. That will help a lot.

Canon Powershot S95. Slips in a pocket and I've used it in the rain without mishap. Amazing images, too.
