I'm going to Dublin for a week and I wonder if someone on RFF knows some nice camera shops in Dublin? I would like to know some shops where they sell some secondhand rangefinders or lenses or other interesting things. All information is very welcome.

Hi Joris, I can ask around if you like, I just returned from a short trip to Dublin yesterday and know several people who live there that can give me names and store addresses.

But....everything is sooo expensive in Ireland. Although cheaper than in England, I still would not recommend buying equipment there. Store rents are astronomically high, so you end up paying for that as well.

If you simply want to touch and hold the cameras to determine what you want to eventually buy elsewhere, well that is a different story.

Best,
Kevin

I checked out cameraexchange.ie just now but it doesn't look so great as far as rangefinders go. I have the feeling the irish spend their money on houses and drink. 😱

Unfortunately camera shops in Dublin are rather expensive, and with regard to second hand stuff, they have a very limited selection. Never seen any RF stuff in Camera Exchange.

Conns Cameras has a small selection of used stuff, some Leicas etc. There is a used section on the web site

http://www.connscameras.ie/

Some of the prices seem high e.g. a standard 50mm Pentax lens (not even the 1.4)
PENTAX 50MM F1.7 eur175.00

Anyway, good luck!

If you are going to Dublin on a holiday I would recommend you get all your film before you go. I find things are generally about 40% more expensive there. For example I was there in January and bought a roll of Neopan 400 for 7 euros. I would get that in London for £3.50. Dublin Camera Exchange on Georges st is not a bad shop, but still way overpriced, even in comparison to a lot of the UK.
Everything in Dublin is expensive apart from eating out and transport. BTW I am originally from there, but left as I could not afford the cost of living there anymore.

Yikes film seems to be very expensive in Ireland 🙁 In Belgium I pay 5€ for a roll of neopan 400, and I always thought that was expensive 😕 I think that I'll have to go film-shopping 😛

Houses?

Yes, houses! Renting in Dublin makes about the same sense as renting in London. I think you can finance a mortgage up to 100%, so "everyone" buys a house (or appartment) and fixes it up.

I believe people have made more money in the past 7 years on the capital gains on their houses in Ireland than through wages.

When I lived in Dublin my step-father had a share in a camera store on the quays. One of my step-brothers was the manager. Can you imagine what that did for my GAS? 😱 Anyway I bought my first SLR (a Zenit 3M) and a wonderful Pentax Spotmatic there. I'm sure that place no longer exists.
