Hello, having been set free from the office ealier today because they were doing some renovations, I decided to use this opportunity to pay a visit to a camera store. but of course! 🙂

Here are what I found...

Kiev:
A Kiev 4A selling for A$200! I didn't dare ask how much the Zorki 4 cost!

Rollie:
2 silver Rollie 35 for over $200 each, one with Tritor and the other with Tessar lens.

Canon:
There were 2 very nice looking canon bottom loading cameras with lenses. Not sure what model cos there was no marking, but the one that looked minty was priced at $900. i think it had a 50/1.8 lens. cant recall for sure. No price on the other which had some tiny dots on the top plate.

Leicas:
It was probably a Leica IIIc or newer model that looked absolutely mint with collapsible elmer! Drool.... but costs $2000... ouch! I'm really impressed by the tiny leica. The canon looked really good, but this was superb! it felt really really nice in the hand.
There was another leica camera that looked like it was from the similar era but strangely had no viewfinder. instead it had an attached viewfinder on the top and some sort of wide angle lens. not sure if it was 21mm or 35mm... no price.

The very patient gentleman showed me a Black (marked Leitz on top) M4-P for $990. Camera looked to be in very good nick except for minor wear on the edges.
He said it was his favourite in the store. There were quite a few other leicas, including a $17000 M7.

Finally, what really intrigued me though, was a brick-like black Contax 1 (i think they were only ever made in black). minor brassing on some parts, but the leather was completely intact and so was the rest of the paint. I cant remember the lens exactly, except it was collapsible... chome. I didn't know how to change shutter speed then, but i did wind the knob and fired the shutter a few times and it worked. quite silently too! Price took me by surprise though ... $350. I took the back off to have a look at the shutter... it doesnt seem completely flat like my previous kiev 4am. maybe a replacement is required... hmmm, what do you think? is this a bargain?

would like to hear what you think of my camera store finds.

This can only be explained by this shop being in an alternate reality.

Let him keep "his treasures".

Did you see my $30 Nikon M with 1st run 5cm F1.4... Another Alternate Reality, but in the right direction. I would feel guilty, except for how Nasty some of the shop's proprieters are. That made me feel pretty good.

On the opposite side of the scale, I just passed a camera shop today, and they had an M2 for 410 Euros - the thought of which is hammering in the back of my mind right now...
Now what would you check/look for on a used M2, tom make sure everything is functioning properly?

I'd grab that Contax 1 at that price. It's an unusual camera and that's actually in the right ballpark for it (unlike the rest you mentioned.). It may need work, but the only way to know is to put a roll through it.

The biggest issue on an M2 is the finder, RF brightness and contrast, shutter speeds at high and low end, flash sync, and make sure the gears on wind and rewind are not "blown". Put a roll of film through it and ask for a 10 day right to bring back. Or just grab it at that price and be prepared to do a CLA.
