Camera Suggestions

After selling my latest as it really didn't suit, and dropping its repacement in a puddle I need suggestions for a new one :bang:

I didn't like either of the above so simply buying the puddled one again is not a good idea.

The last camera I had that I loved was my gr digital, but that has since died a death being taken through nepal, the himalayas and reaching its eventual demise on a padstow beach (can you see a pattern developing here?)

anyway, I was considering the GRD2 as I really did love my GRD but the one thing that frustrated me, and the one thing that probably allows it to have such a magnificent lens, is the lack of zoom- sure it made me think but it also meant I couln't get shots that were even just that little bit out of reach

I am willing to consider a dslr but nothing too pricey, and would rather a smaller body

by the way it was the ricoh gx200 that I sold on....I am not sure what it was about it but I just couldn't get on with it, I know that it's a great little camera but it just wasn't 'the one'

any other suggestions in the compact realm? 😕

should I 'go film'?


I am a bit lost the grd2 is the only thing that appeals at all at the moment.

You ought to take a look at the new Olympus EP-1. Interchangeable lenses. Larger sensor than most P&S cameras. And it's much smaller than a DSLR.

What are you looking to spend? If you are considering a DSLR then the price of the Olymous EP-1 shouldn't be out of the question. You could get the zoom lens and the 17mm prime. The lack of a viewfinder shouldn't be a problem because you didn't list it as a con with the GRD.

absoloute maximum of £300 but I am lookign at second hand.

lack of viewfinder didn't bother me with the grd as I had one attatched- not the digital thing they advertise, just a normal one

there's a nice looking canon I have seen hanging about for about the £300 mark but I don't know what it's called.

what's the speed of the gr 2 like? i found the grd a bit too slow sometimes....like it was thinking about whether or not to take a photograph

great image quality, very good high ISO for a compact.
fabulous camera. I liked it so much I got two of them.

many folks love the Canon G10 but it is bigger than the LX3 and the LX3 has a wider, faster lens and a lot less shutter lag. Also LX3 shoots in 3 aspect ratios and you control that with a manual switch.

Olympus EP1 is out of your price range I think.

I am nervous of it to be perfectly honest, I had a leica c lux which is of that 'panasonic-leica' family and hated it, the switch was annoying as it constantly turned itself on in my bag, the body may have been metal but all the controls felt shoddy and the numerous options on the menu just irritated me. bah humbug. I know it isn't the same camera so perhaps i should stop be ing so prejudiced.

I would look for a used Panasonic G1. The kit lens is quite good. You could then start saving for the 45-200 zoom. It is my all-time favorite digital camera. It has the same 4/3 sensor as the E-P1, has an EVF and an articulating display.

A work colleague just bought a Canon G10. She moved up from a Fuji Finepix, and one thing she mentioned several times is that the Fuji would turn itself on in her handbag. Then when she wanted to use it, the battery would be run down.

I make my living in photography and have little tolerance for shoddy plasticky stuff. I liked the LX3 also because the layout is very intuitive and I did not have to look at the instructions. Some of the controls are small but I have big hands and fingers and it does not bother me. It has never turned itself on.

I should add that this is NOT my main camera. I need to use Leica film cameras and DSLR's for my work. I use the LX3 to supplement the other equipment, when I need something small and portable. But I to find it quite sturdy and great image quality, LOVE that it has the f2 24mm (equivalent) lens and shoots in 3:2 aspect ration like the DSLR's

There is a lot of G1 info here on RFF in the Micro 4/3 forum.
I agree with Pablito that the LX3 is not shoddy. I carried one in my purse for several months with no problems. I just prefer the G1 because of the bigger sensor and ability to change lenses. I carry it in my purse, but it is bigger and heavier than the LX3. You would not make a mistake with either (in my humble opinion.)
