vmc226, scrape everything as close to bare metal as possible. A small wood chisel works great. If some pieces of vulcanite have been glued back in place finding the right solvent can be a problem. They might not all be glued with the same glue either. Try naptha (lighter fluid), lacquer thinner, alcohol, etc.
You don't have to get every last tiny vestige of crud off of the body. Reasonably clean is good enough. Have fun! I sat out on the front porch so a couple of flicks with the broom and I'd cleaned up the mess.
