vmc226, scrape everything as close to bare metal as possible. A small wood chisel works great. If some pieces of vulcanite have been glued back in place finding the right solvent can be a problem. They might not all be glued with the same glue either. Try naptha (lighter fluid), lacquer thinner, alcohol, etc.

You don't have to get every last tiny vestige of crud off of the body. Reasonably clean is good enough. Have fun! I sat out on the front porch so a couple of flicks with the broom and I'd cleaned up the mess.

Can't comment on Camera Leather's service but I have an a-la-carte black Leica MP with red leather. I think it looks great but its all a matter of taste. By the way - I didn't order it from leica - It's a dealers sample I got at a used price. I'll post a picture of it in my gallery later. It probably does attract some attention but nothing that's a problem.

Just Got my M4 Recovered

A large piece of vulcanite came off my M4 in May during travel to Belize so I sent CameraLeather my camera in early June. Turn around time was about a month but I was on a motorcycle road trip and told him I was not in a hurry for the camera.

I had it redone in griptec(?) and am VERY PLEASED with the result. First class service. Now I want an M2, get it painted black from 35 Restoration, and a new covering from CL to go with it. Of course, I should probably just use what I have before getting another M.
 
Can people post pictures of CL non-traditional colors. Other than cardinal red which I have all but decided upon for my chrome M2, can people post pictures of M's shorn in greens, blues and browns? I have another chrome M2 that needs to be redone but can't decide on the color.


I also have 2 black MP's that might get new coverings as I don't like the factory covers. What colors do you think go best with black?

Be extra careful when using a chisel to remove any covering. I've got the scar from 7 stitches on my right index finger (I'm left handed) from such a method. I now use J.W. etc's Safe Strip eco-friendly paint remover (http://www.artistclub.com/tools/itemid_84210/tools_display.aspx#) for this task. Let the remover sit for at least 12 hours then peel off the covering. BTW--this remover won't burn your skin either!

Ah terry. Are there two zippers? Or did one have to unbuckle and unzip the full length? I can't for the life of me remember.



I guess that's what the hood was for, keeping the whole ensemble up when the zipper was open.
 
Most of that couple's "camera leather" experiences are unprintable here.
