Just a heads up on CameraLeathers GripTac Covering.

I just put it on my M7 and have to tell you it is probably the best covering for gripping the camera that I have ever used.

Not as Pretty as some of the leathers that Morgan offers, but damn, the camera seems to stick in your hand.

It's a rubberized material and should be very durable. Looks kinda' like Vulcanite, but not quite. I was slightly put off at first with the look, but after a few days it grew on me and like I said, the grip you get on the camera makes it well worth it.

I am in no way connected with Morgan or Cameraleathers, just a Satisfied customer who has used his product for years.

I put it onto my original (purchased 1972) M3 after the vulcanite got too ratty. It is a WICKED GOOD replacement. The grip is great, the looks are almost perfect, only different because the edges of the pebble-grain are a little sharper (which is why it is so grippy). Very highly recommended.

Ugh. I keep thinking about recovering my camera from the plain old stuff that's on it now. But I get discouraged by the hassle of it all. And the griptac looks ugly as hell from the pictures. But the appeal of it being supersticky is hard to ignore. The only time I feel unsure of my grip o the camera is when I'm reloading film. And I'm afraid it's only a matter of time until..... thud.

Swoop- It is not as hard to recover a Leica as some would lead you to believe. On a M6 or 7 it is a 10 minute affair. Griptac does look "awful"... so now I have stopped taking pictures of my camera.

I have heard from some old-timers that the original vulcanite had some of this "grippyness" but after time it became brittle and lost this quality. I think it is a huge improvement over the "pleather" cover of the M6. Highly recommended.

does it come in cobalt blue?

Joe,
Any color you want as long as it's Black.

Actually it comes in Charcoal Black ( which is more like a charcoal grey) or a medium grey. I have not seen the medium grey in person, but the black is real close to my used M7 in Black Chrome and blends nicely. Not a Jet Black by any means

I think it was originally developed by 3M for golf club grips and so it's pretty tough and non-slippery. I have the gray on a Konica C35 and it's not bad. I'm waiting for Morgan to recover a Minolta 7S w/ black-probably much better looking.

Another happy GripTac adopter here - I got it on my 2 M8s & 1 MP, and I have a kit ready for my incoming second MP: works fantastically, looks good to me (industrial-tough-downtobusiness-you name it), installing it is a breeze. The ultimate cover IMHO.

Say, that doesn't look bad at all! But don't you have to remove the old Vulcanite with chemicals, sort of like paint stripper? I thought it was a messy operation.

The M's up to the M5 are Messy as it is Vulcanite and has to be removed and one of the way's is Paint Stripper. The 6 and up are Leatherette and just peel off, so it's fairly easy. I've done both and just did an M4-P a few months ago.
Not a lot of fun, but worth it in the end. I think there is step by step info on the CameraLeather web site http://www.cameraleather.com/

The covering on my R-D1 is getting loose. love to have new covering but Morgan says he does not make a kit for the R-D1. Any ideas?
Akiva,
Unfortunately, I don't believe Morgan sell the GripTac in sheets, but he does sell sheets of some of his other coverings, You could use the old covering from your R-D1 as a pattern and cut the new material. The R-D1's should peel off pretty easy. You can also get the material @ Micro-Tools and I think Aki-Asahi sells sheets, but I'm not sure. Most of the sheets have adhesive backing so it is easy to apply once you cut it out. May not be perfect, but it will stay put. The other option is contact cenenting the old covering back on.
