I'm looking for a CLA and shutter speed adjustments on a Leica M4-P. I'm considering CameraQuest. Any history out there with their service?

🙂

Well, I can't directly answer your question, but I do simply want to say that DAG did a really great job for me and I doubt that I could speak highly enough of him.

William

Thanks, William,

While I'd like to keep the camera on the west coast, the bottom line is good service, and your's is the second positive opinion I've heard regarding DAG. Wisconsin is looking a lot closer. 🙂

Another name would be Sherry Krauter. No experience with her work but I hear it's on a par with DAG.

I would check prices. Cameraquest's repair prices always hit me as being high. I have used DAG, Sherry, KEH, Popflash, Mark Hama (I need to start buying better quality stuff now that I look at this list) and Essex. All have been very good (I scratch my head a little with Essex) but DAG is tops on my list right now.

If you want to keep the camera in California, Ken Ruth is mentioned to be good. He's near Santa Cruz. www.baldmtn.com He's on the LHSA list. There's also a place called ICT in Mountain View that's good but expensive. I have a friend in SF that does it on the side cheap.

Does Adolph Gasser in SF still do Leica work? It was great many years ago, winterized a pair of IIF/IIIF for me...Gasser himself was a fine craftsman, machined things for Ansel and designed much of the Nikon Photomic meter.

I used CameraQuest to CLA an M2 and lens earlier this year. It took a little longer than quoted to complete, but I was not in a hurry so did not pressure him on that. One thing that was a little disappointing was that I had specifically asked him about a spot inside the lens. Was it fungus or what? The lens was returned with the spot and no comment about what it was.

Years ago, I used a guy in San Francisco but can't remember the name and doubt if he is still there. Have never used Gassers.

I used CameraQuest for a rangefinder adjustment and general CLA of my Bessa R. It was completed on time and functions perfectly. It was returned in different, and I think less protective, packaging from what I shipped it in. But, it was still well packed and arrived with the adjustments intact. If I had to do it over again I wouldn't send it elsewhere.

Although DAG and Sherry are both very good, they are pretty booked up and as a result have fairly long turnarounds.

I vote for Youxin Ye, who has done a great job on my cameras. He usually turns repairs and CLAs around in a matter of a few days, not weeks!

How long is it since Youxin did a repair/CLA for you? I seem to remember reading he had stopped his repair activities.

I think they send out for repair, not sure they have tech in house

Hey P-dog! We'll have to get together again for another Bay Area RFF meeting. Thanks for the local contacts.

DAG sounds promising.

I wondered about Gasser's, but the last time I was in there (earlier this year) I was a little disappointed--the downstairs is still great though!

BTW, I thought about Keeble-Schucat. Does anyone know if they send repairs out and where?

🙂

DAG and Sherry are the best, but ask them about turnaround time. The Mountain View place has a web site www.ictcamera.com. They have positive reviews on photo.net. There used to be a guy in SF years ago but he closed his place. Last I heard he was doing it part time out of his house. Willie M. was his name. Fireside Camera in SF might have contact info for him. Ask them about Leica repairs.

Youxin Ye is still doing Leica repairs

He's still doing Leica repairs.

I called him a few weeks ago to do a CLA on a body I was looking at buying, but I decided not to get the camera.
