Cameras and watches.

Here's a Sheffield desk model I fixed up long ago:

it had a cheap 1-jewel movement:

I’m Just for fun!!!

Analog? Digital?
Analog. I don’t the like the stepwise, second-hand jumps that almost al quartz watches use. I use a MacMini, two iPhones and an iPad daily. That’s my limit. So a smart watch is of no interest (even though they perfectly simulate an analog watch second hand. I do wear a 9 year old. Shinola Runwell quartz watch during yard work or other domestic projects where the watch could be accidentally damaged.
Manual? Automatic?
Automatic. I have four automatic watches and the TIssot Seastar 1000 with a Powermatic 80 movement is the best time keeper.
Dress or sports?
Yes. I have one dress watch and the others are sport. I swim regularly so two have water resistant ratings of 20 and 30 ATM.
Do you try to match your watch with your camera gear?
Never.

I hear ya!

The Smart TV drives me nuts…🤬

Who was it that said “Life is simple, but humans insist on making it complicated”…?

Shinola. Hmmm.. I forgot about those, I need to research a little! Thanks!👍

Fun with my Seiko pocket watch.
I have 3 nice pocket watches. I thought I was going to be a pocket watch kind of guy.
Alas, they sit in the jewelry box next to the cuff-links and not in my pocket.

Pocket watches are so cool…😇

This Orient Star is what I wear to weddings and funerals.
It's my "dress watch". Do people still use the term "dress watch" anymore?

Actually, yes… those who work in construction and labor intensive positions like mechanics and, cough cough, techs have work watches and some actually still dress for formal events like weddings and such. But as this article mentions, the distinctions are blurred. 🤷🏼‍♂️

My first watch was a pocket watch, and I have liked them ever since. Good to see them here.

I have three old Hamilton railroad watches (21 and 23 jewels each) and I have a 17-jewel Illinois from 1914, passed down to me from the original owner.

Some day I'll get it together and post of photo of them here.

@Yokosuka_Mike What got you into Orient watches? I've had my eye on them for quite a few years, probably since the very early 2000s when the Poor Man's Watch Forum was around. A sadly departed friend used to wear a digital Orient that he'd had for decades. When I was in Japan in 2010, there were many fascinating and attractive Orients at shops like Yodobashi Camera and BIC Camera. I was tempted to pick up a salmon dial dress Orient Star but there seemed to be a bit of dust under the crystal, though!

Fashion is an odd thing to me, having reached a certain age. While I do like some articles about about fashion, as they are somewhat interesting, I live a rather casual life.

I rarely see anyone dressed as depicted in the Gazette, but apparently they are out there somewhere. One article I did read that I thought was interesting stated that retirees, over a certain age, have no rules to be judged by and they have the “right” to wear anything they want. LOL. 😃

Finally! As an old dog, we are given the freedom of expression… which oddly, I have embraced all along. Dress watch? Casual watch? It’s all a personal choice these days… for the most part but then I have never attended those events where fashion was important.

But I do find that certain watches, like a nice camera, should not be considered in many of life activities. I prefer to take care of them. A work watch has its place!

I was a diver when I was in the Navy. So, dive watches were what I always wore. First I wore Seiko dive watches for many years and then I switched to Omega. After I retired from the Navy I was no longer interested in diving and dive watches. I was ready for a change. While I was looking around Yodobashi Camera I was constantly attracted to the Orient Watches. I was not familiar with the brand but I took a chance and bought an Orient Star wrist watch and I was really impressed with the quality, style, and precision of the watch. Over a period of time I bought a few more.

I currently have a Seiko titanium dive watch, it looks great, light as a feather, and it keeps lousy time.

I have a few Casio G-Shock watches including a nice 35th Anniversary G-Shock. These are super accurate timepieces, but they’re not classy. I’m 68 now and I like classy. The Orient Star’s that I own are classy!

BTW, I sold my Omega Seamaster and Speedmaster a few years ago to help pay for my Fujifilm medium format gear. I don’t miss them; they were not accurate and maintenance was unbelievably expensive.

So, that’s my story. And, nowadays… when I travel I wear a Casio G-Shock; they're super accurate and if one is stolen or lost I don’t care. The rest of the time I wear Orient Star watches; they make me happy.

All the best,
Mike

Great story, Mike!

Orient watches are interesting to me having never run across that particular brand. They look very nice!🙂
