Cameras for trip to P.E.I.

This summer my family and I have planned a trip to Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia. We are getting to the area by train, then renting a car. I am not going to ask which cameras to take, I am going to tell you.

My wife and 2 children all have digital point and shoot cameras. In my Domke 803 satchel bag, I will be carrying an M6 with 50mm f1.5 J3 lens loaded with HP5+, a Minilux with 40mm f2.4 Summarit loaded with 100asa slide film, and either a Hasselblad 500CM with 80mm f2.8 Planar, or my old Rolleiflex (thank you Butch!) with 75mm f3.5 Planar loaded with either HP5+ or FP4+.

Can you tell I'm a normal lens guy? (I might cave in and also take a CV25mm lens.)

I'm thinking 10 rolls of each type. I can buy more there if need be.

Butch is a gentleman and RFF member who I traded some gear with a while ago. He recently gifted my old camera (that he felt he no longer needed) back to me.

Nothing like travelling light! 😉

PEI is one of my most favorite places on the planet. My wife and I did several bike tours there in the later 1980's and early '90's.

Temps are generally pleasant in the summer although they can "surprise" you. We were finishing up a tour one year in Murray Harbor where we had left our car with a friendly B&B operator.

It was Canada Day and we joined our hosts for a CD celebration at the local Canadian Legion hall. Of all things - the temps climbed to around 90F - everyone was remaking on how unusually hot it was.

We really "felt" for the poor RCMP "Mountie" who was at the festivities dressed in full dress woolies! Gosh was he suffering.

But generally you will find pleasant temps - wonderfully long evenings (that year we were there near solstice so you can imagine how long the days were!).

Another year we were there around August 1st - when they have the big fair in Charlottetown. Great photo op place and with beginner's luck I even won ten bucks at the horse races betting on whims!

BTW, NS is great too - but we fell very much in love with PEI!

My family is from PEI, and I'm sort of from there. They don't allow more than one camera per person with 2 cameras per car maximum. Excess cameras should be sent to me.

A funny true fact is that it costs nothing to travel to the island by bridge or ferry, but they charge you when you want to leave.

Take a wide of some kind. There are many places along the Cabot Trail you'll appreciate a wider than normal view.

P.E.I. is great in the summer. Looking forward to seeing some pictures. Also, I recommend New Glasgow Lobster Suppers in Hunter River, P.E.I. (NOT in New Glasgow, N.S. as one might expect). I could go for a lobster right now, actually . . .

It wouldn't be much fun anyway with 3 others on the bike!

I did ride to PEI a few years ago with my brother-in-law. He was riding his 1975 Honda 750-4, and me on my 1974 BMW R90/6. 3 days to get there from Toronto, 2 days on the island, and 3 days back. I didn't ride my bike for a month afterwards! The nicest part of the trip was the south shore of St. Lawrence along the Gaspe of Quebec. We cut inland at Mont Joli, but next time I want to do the entire Gaspe loop.

I hope you have a great & safe trip. While in Nova Scotia, dont forget Peggy' Cove. Its a very rugged but beautiful coast line.

That is where I had my first lobster (34 years ago) washed down with a couple of "Moose Head Ales"

In 1973, I rode my Yamaha RD350 from Toronto, around the entire Gaspe Peninsula, and then east to the Cabot Trail. Twelve days, eleven nights, no tent, one night in a motel near Moncton. The day after I returned to TO, I rode to London to visit a friend. I was, of course, much younger.

I regret not devoting more time to my visit there.
