If a kodak lens says EY thats 40? or 50? does the Y count as 0 or 10? The camera in question was not known to be made in 40 or 50 . the medalist. I dont think its that great anyway as I thought it would be. hype. But im curious about the date.

1940 is the date for the EY Kodak code.

Yes, 1940. That's interesting because just as you say, everything I have heard is that the Medalist I didn't come out until 1941. I wonder if perhaps some of the lenses were made earlier, prior to assembly of the camera? This thread on photo.net has some interesting information about dates and history, including an additional serial number on the back of the lens barrel. I would be curious to learn how low that serial number is on yours.
