Can anyone identify this reloadable cassette, please?

Once again the title says it all.

I found this in the Leica box as I sorted out some bits and pieces and wondered where it came from. It's obviously not a Leica B, although the spool could well be from one. The only markings on it say "428" on each end.

BTW, comparing it to the Leica ones I noticed that there's two heights to them, this unknown one is the height of the tall ones. That makes me wonder about the short one with it's chrome clip at the side and grey spool inside...

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards, David

The shorter one with chrome tip you are referring to is for the M-series Leicas. The FILCA cassette is taller and fits the screw mount Leicas.

This one is probably an aftermarket copy of the FILCA or maybe one made for one of the Leica screw mount copies..

Thanks for the info about the short cassettes.

I'd wonderd about it but the longer ones were a nice snug fit in the black plastic "M" containers that I dismissed it. And then the "M" one is called a "Leica N" cassette here and there and since all my others are "Leica B" versions, I wondered how many minor changes had been made.

Trouble is, these things are so trivial they never get illustrated properly, even the instructions for the "B" show a slightly different version to my ones.

That not a shirley wellard. SW is built like a Rolex and looks as nice - but without knobs or tabs on top.

Shown above is a "FILCA" Leitz film cassette, the first model that came with the Leica I in 1925. Only the center-spool is not the correct type. The correct type was an all brass spool with a very simple device under wich the film was slit and fold back. The first FILCAs did not carry the Leitz name. I have no explanation for the "428" markings.

Thanks folks for the replies.

Erik, I bought the cassette in one of those boxes of bits and pieces you find from time to time and, luckily, never finished sorting out all the bits and pieces. I've found a "Leica B" cassette with an odd centre spool and have shown it here with the inner and outers of "428". Does it look like the right one to you?

It has a long slot each side of the main tube and XXX knurling on the little knob.

As for "428" could it mean the April 1928 batch of cassettes?

Thanks again.

No, it doesn't! It should have profiled top and bottom disks and a small, thin bar mounted alongside the center tube, top to bottom, under wich the film must be slit and fold back.
I am absolutely not sure about it, but maybe the 428-number corresponds with the camera number with wich the cassette was originally supplied. If this is true, it will be a complete novelty to Leica historians.

Erik.
