Can I shoot slide film...?

The AE-1 should have a electronically controlled shutter so you I wouldn't think you'd need to worry about it being off.

OF COURSE!
It is not the camera kemo-sabe, it is the dude behind it!
I think the most important thing is to enjoy what you are doing regarless of the results, if you are stressing out too much on whether you are doing things right or not you'll only spoil your hobby. That means learning from your mistakes of course, but having a relaxed attitude.

In your first roll bracket +/- 1/2 stops and see the results, slide film prefers some underexposure while print film prefers some overesposure to saturate colors.
I always preferred to underexpose by 1/3-1/2 (set the ISO 1/3-1/2 stop faster)

To start I would choose Fuji Sensia100 or 400 depending if you are going to shoot in dark places
Then set your camera correctly, shoot a few slides at box speed and then close/open 1/2 stop.

Shoot the rest of the roll at box speed and enjoy!!!!
