My main windows computer has again failed me, having died of a virus or some other problem. Frankly, I'd be glad to see the back of windows. Since putting Ubuntu Linux on an old laptop, it's run many times faster, required many times less maintenance and lasted for many times longer. But does it mix with photography?
I briefly tried using GIMP on the laptop but it really wasn't a fair test on the crap little screen. So, if anyone has any experience, I'd appreciate their input. Here's what I need from the computer:
- the ability to crop to aspect ratios, accurately rotate (to level out horizons etc), adjust curves, clone stamp.
- resize images for printing (including some mild enlarging)
- calibrate monitor for printing (at the moment I use a calibration card and nVidia's control panel to manually adjust brightness/contrast etc)
- hopefully in the near future I'll be buying a dedicated printer, so basic support for photo printers is a must
Regards
Chris
