The Maple Leaf Flag looks good. When I was living in Canada for school in the mid-70's the story was that the end bands were to have been blue signifying the two oceans at either side of Canada. But it was too much like the southern neighbor's flag and was not pursued. I can't vouch for the validity of the story but I sure can vouch for the sensitivities.

I"m not Canadian but I do know many designs were considered. Eventually, I believe they agreed on a pretty nifty flag. There is no mistaking it. Many moons ago, the French Consul in an African country told me that during a demonstration the crowd decided to burn the French flag but mistakenly burned the Dutch one, instead. Cheers, OtL

Yes, there is an abundance of Tricolors. The Dutch are mature enough and have such a good sense of humor that I am sure that they had a good laugh over that one. And the irate crowd was happy because they had a red, white and blue flag to burn so it ended well for all. Flag and effigy burning is great street theater and a valuable pressure relief as long as it does not become an auto-de-fé. I also love it when the flag burners catch on fire themselves. It is a fool's carnival and short of a rainstorm calms things pretty well and pretty fast.

I remember being confused seeing marchers in Potosi, Bolivia carrying Canadian flags. Then I sort of figured it out. This was from my flickr description at the time (2001):
" It was kind of interesting to see the Canadian flag, and at first I wondered why. But then I saw the marchers with Swiss and Japanese flags, and I realized it was the red and white colours they liked. Matches the Potosi state flag:"

And they are marching in business suits, which is very considerate of them.

Yes - between visiting family in Toronto and getting our property in eastern Ontario prepped for retirement. Still keeping the wheels turning Stateside though.

Canadians are notoriously polite. Unless they have a hockey stick in their hands. ;o) Fait l'hockey, eh! So I guess imitators would be the same, right?
