Personally,I think Canon 28mm f3.5 LTM Black version is the best 28mm lens Canon had never made. Black paint 28mm is very rare and seems that this type is more modern than the other types.

So.....let us see what this lens can give to us~

So far, I've seen nothing but good results from the various Canon lenses presented here on RFf. Can't wait to get mine cleaned so I can use it. Of course, it also helps to have a good photographer behind the camera. Lovely shots Kevin.

Kevin,

Nice shots.

What makes you think the later black version is different optically than an earlier chrome version? I own a 28/3.5 chrome version and find it to be a great lens. I only shoot B&W and it loves rainy and overcast days also. Love the size. Also the Canon VF'er is rather nice and bright.

Do you also have a black VF'er?

Sorry.... Actually I am not sure.... Only because it has unusual black paint and some users said it is the best 28mm compared with others canon 28mm. I think there must be something different from the other types. I need more information to support it.

Yes,my second black 28 3.5 also come from a black 28mm view finder.

This is my first 28 3.5(Black)

I just wanted to ask how bad was the purple fringing using such an old lens thats single coated on a M9?

I'm very curious because I do not shoot digital at all, but I'm wondering...

Cal

Hi Cal,

Don't worry about it. As what I see, there is no purple fringing appears in the photos when I use 28mm lens or even 25mm lens on M9(Or maybe this could happen under special condition.). Purple fringing will happen on 19mm lens or other wider lens.

Wish this could help you.

Kevin,

The black lens is very pretty. Also you are lucky to have the matching VF'er. Recently compared my Canon VF'er to an old metal Leica VF'er and my Canon was brighter, although the newer Leica plastic VF'er was just as bright as my Canon. Of course both the Leica VF'ers have bright lines though while the Canon doen't.

As I remember there is a physical difference between my old 28/3.5 and your black version as far as size and weight. Optically I believe they are the same. Your black version is kinda rare and of course more desirable.

Thanks for watching~~

To be honest,I don't know what is the vignetting. 🙂 But I can say all these photos were post without any PS.

Cheers

My chrome version dates back to the early 50's. Back then they made resolution the most important factor in lens design and contrast was kinda secondary. Lenses like the 50 Rigid had remarkable center sharpness, but had soft corners.

My 28/3.5 vignettes wide open and less stopped down for that retro look, but it is a sharp lens that retains some of that retro look. I kinda like it.

BTW I know someone who had a 28/3.5 that he called mushy. I presume that he didn't have a good one.

Deeply thanks for your information~~ Seems I should correct myself~
Welcome to post your photos taken by canon 28mm f3.5. Maybe we can see is there any difference between them~ 🙂

The later Canon LTM lenses with black anodized barrels have updated coatings vs. the earlier versions, but i don't think any have different optical formulas. My experience in this regard is with the 28/3.5, 35/2.8 and 50/1.8: The black-barreled versions are much lighter in weight; all have 40mm filter threads (the chrome 28/3.5 and 35/2.8 take 34mm filters); and the coatings have a gold reflection (rather than the purple/blue of the older models).

In the case of the 28/3.5 and 35/2.8, the later black model is significantly bigger than the chrome version. In my opinion, this makes the ergonomics much better, as the focus ring has a much better grip area. Also, the black model has evenly-spaced f-stop markings on the aperture ring, while the chrome model has logarithmically-spaced markings.
