Canon LTM Canon 28mm LTM Lens Shade

Two years ago I researched and bought a Canon 28mm f/3.5 LTM and I use it on my Leica M4-P.

I like using a yellow filter so I bought a 34mm Heliopan Yellow 8 for it. I also picked up a generic wide angle lens shade for it. The shade vignettes in the corners.

Here's the one I have:

I took some test shots with/without the filter & shade:

The first row of negatives is without a filter or lens shade.
The second row of negatives is with a filter but no shade
The third row is with a filter and the shade.

The lens was focused to infinity. From left to right the apertures are f/22, f/16, f/11, and f/8.

The shade is the culprit.

I don't mind use the lens without a filter or shade as it's well recessed but with a filter on I want a shade to help stop reflections off the filter. I can't find any wider shades.

Any ideas for getting a shade on this lens?

The cone angle of the shade isn't likely to be the culprit. Its the doubled-extension of filter ring plus shade-mount-ring that's impinging on your view. Try a step-up ring and a larger diameter shade. Step up rings are usually very low profile, and there's less chance the filter+stepup ring will vignette, and this will give sightline clearance to mount a shade.

If the filter+stepup (without shade) doesn't vignette, but filter+stepup+shade STILL vignettes, you need a still larger step to handle the angle of view. Or move the stepup next the lens, and get larger filter & shade.

Thanks! As I wrote the post I thought of that and ordered a 34-37mm up ring and a 37mm WA vented shade. I'm fearful that it will block the viewfinder.

If that's doesn't work I guess I'll have to have SK Grimes design a rectangular clamp-on shade with the corner cut out like the Leica 28mm shade.

I need to run another test with just the shade on the 28mm and see how it does.

I can't believe that after 66 years we are still trying to engineer a proper shade for this lens.

Learn to shoot the camera one-handed, wear a hat, and use it to shade the lens when you shoot the camera.

In looking deeper, I find myself reading an old thread from some years ago when -you- were researching this very lens, and the point is made that Canon never supplied a shade for it — presumably for exactly the reasons you’re finding: it’s already deeply recessed, and a shade simply gets in your view. And you lose the benefit of it being such an elegant and tiny lens by mounting a shade. But needs be. I expect the vented shade will serve.

Your 28/3.5 looks like it’s the Serenar version, is that right? Are you pleased by its performance?

Yes it's a Serenar (type 2 from 1952) and I am very pleased with it. While the lens is recessed that only works when you do not have a filter on. With a filter the glass is exposed and that's why it needs a shade. I would guess that 90% of the time I use a yellow filter.

I will get it sorted out. For now I'm using it without the shade and I make sure the sun is behind me.

Oh yes. That is a lens I have and use every now and then, and the OP shows the exact very shade I use on it too.

So yeah. If I use a filter with a "deep" or "thick" profile, I get vignetting. It's helpful to know that without the hood, I still get a predictable low-contrast image.

If folks manage excellent results from this lens with careful consideration of its "history", I think that's great!

OK I did test the lens with only the shade on it and you are right - it's the thickens of the Heliopan filter ring that pushes the shade into the frame. Here are some frames with the shade but with out the filter. Left to right f/22, f/16, f/11, & f/8 - lens was focused to infinity:

I'm thinking of having SK Grimes modding the shade so that it slips over the lens barrel and passes by the filter ring, sitting closer to the lens. A set-screw would hold it in place.

.. or even a tight friction-fit, as SK Grimes does with their custom lens caps. SKG is 10 miles down the road from me. I could drop by and supervise, hahah 🙂

The 34-37mm step ring is in as are two different style 37mm shades to test. Just need nice weather now that Christmas is over.
