This is an excellent lens, but the L version of it has better resolution, as given in some online reports.
I owned the 200mm F2.8 (non-L) once, it was a fine lens. Raid is right about L Canon lenses. They use Fluorite glass which can be used to make exceptionally well corrected lenses, with particularly fine color rendition. The Canon L lenses are also exceptionally expensive!
I had a 200 f4 which was a brilliant lens nice and sharp and very small, that was in the days I used 2 F1ns.
Always fancied the 200 2.8 or a 80-200 f4 L.
