Canon 35/2.8 impressions

Hi, I just had a lucky score... found a nice clean Canon 35/2.8 black/chrome ltm lens in Sydney last week.

I can see why Sean rated them so highly in his LL review... it's not the sharpest lens on the block, but it's tiny, light and very capable. Lug or ring focusing with nice action, evenly spaced click stops.

Below a couple of samples - the kitchen sink was my first test frame, wide open, made into a pseudo-lith print with PS.

The taxi shows the lovely compression of the tonal range that makes it a 'sunny -day' lens.

I also have the all chrome version. Very tiny and solid build.
Like Sean described .. a joy to use on these high contrast sunny summerdays!
Pictures have a real vintage look: both in color and B&W.
 
I'm working on an article now about photographing in Daytona Beach Florida (an ongoing project) and I made all the R-D1 pictures for that piece using the Canon 28/2.8 which has a similar look to my 35/2.8. Many of the pictures in my long term review of the R-D1 were made with these two wonderful little lenses. Wide open, of course, they're very very soft in the outer zones (which some people like) but at the classic outdoor sunny day apertures (F/8 and F/11) they're both fairly sharp and have that tonality I love so much. I love them both.

Being able to use lenses like this is one of my favorite things about the R-D1. BTW, the color in that taxi picture really is just lovely.

thanks for that... it's the Ozzie light wot done it!

I was just in an excellent shop called Camera Exchange in Melbourne and they've got a treasure trove of Leica lenses - 3 35 'crons for example, as well as a Canon 50/0.95 among other things. The guy there was extolling the virtues of the Canon 35/2 but I've never seen one (he didn't have one either!)

Has anyone got one? I'd like to know more about it.

Also, has anyone got a source for a lens shade for the 35/2.8? It has an unusual 40mm thread which no-one seems to stock.
 
Unless you use it for protection there is no real need for a lens shade (if that even exists).
You probably noticed the glas is a bit deeper inside the barel.
I shot the lens in the sunniest possible circumstances and never felt the need for a shade.

thanks for that, I had noticed that it was a recessed lens, and so far it's been free from flare, so I guess I'll pass on the shade this time (breaking a long habit here!)
 
40mm thread on the 35/2,8 canon? Later model perhaps? My chrome one has 34mm threads. I use a Leitz clamp-on 12585 on it. I try to use shades all the time. But, the chrome one is not that deeply recessed.

I can't wait to get off this trip and go home and try it out.

Planning on shooting some efke with it. Will add a nice tough to the photo's of the old airplanes i'm going to use it for.

Any one know of a 50mm (not a leica except maybe an elmar?) that will give me this look?
