I have just bought a very nice Canon Screw Type 35/2.8 lens. Can any one please tell me what lens hood does it take. If I cannot find a Canon make, then is there a universal one I can buy, but I really need to know what size thread does it take. Thank you.

The chrome serenar version is a34mm filter thread. I use a step up ring (to 37mm) and third party hood. The Newer black barrel version I am not familiar with.

The chrome 35/2.8 takes 34mm filters, the black version takes 40mm filters.
Canon made a hood for the lens (PM me if you want one). But it's about as big as the lens -- I use a Leitz FOOKH on my chrome lens, which is much smaller. The black lens has its front element deeply enough recessed in the barrel that a hood isn't necessary.
Cheers,
Ari

Canon made a hood for the 50mm1.8 and a reference to the 35mm 2.8 but it doesn't fit my old chrome wide . .. ... drats! I wanted it to do double duty. Should'da gotten the cheapy.

The hood and series VI lens adapter are separate pieces. The adapter can be found in 42mm clamp-on and 40mm screw-in (for lenses with 40mm filter threads), as well as 36mm clamp-on and 34mm screw-in (for lenses with 34mm filter threads). Your chrome 35/2.8 would need one of the latter adapters. I'd guess that a generic series VI adapter in the right size would accept your canon hood, though, if you can't find an original Canon adapter.

This generic screw-in hood looks like an even better fit on the 35/2.8 though:
