This lens is getting more expensive every month. A Canon 25/2 (without caps) just went for $475 on ebay:

I'm glad I decided to settle for the 35/1.8.

i think it's the 'famed' second version which is supposed to be sharper than the first.
the canon museum shows both versions being pretty much the same though...
still, way too much $$

$475 for a Canon 35mm f2.... I found a small ad in the December 1967 edtion of Modern Photography magazine ," 35mm F2 CANON, SCREW MOUNT, LATEST, NEW, special. $59.50, case $3.00. ALTMANS, 129 N. Wabash Ave, Chicago 60602" .

If you adjust for inflation according to the consumer price index (http://www.austintxgensoc.org/calculatecpi.html), $59.50 in 1967 works out to $345 today.
Not exactly sure what I'm trying to say, but I thought it might be interesting.

The same goes for the Canon 50/1.8. The last two I was following on Eb** went for close to $300. Maybe people are stocking up for the summer

Oh my god!!!!
If anyone wants my Canon 35/2 drop me a note. I can't keep it for those prices.
Second version, the serial number on mine is only a hundred or so from the end of production.... it must be one of the best!!!!

If I were you I'd do it... of course thats because if you were me you'd do it to buy a leica lens. I'm confused now...

Rover, in fact if I were you I'd get a spanner wrench, then take off the cult element from the lens, and maybe both original caps and sell them on ebay for $300 or so

I already have a 35 Summicron, that is why I can sell it. It is a great little lens, but every man has his price.

sell while the selling is good!
tomorrow they may realize it's just a canon lens
i guess i could sell mine as i'm quite happy with the 35/2.8
but then it's kinda cool owning a cult symbol...

How do these cults start?... maybe the great comments on the 35mm/F2 in Peter Decherts book (page 199) & members of this forum combined. But this cannot explain the high price of the 35mm/1.8, as Dechert ..while not knocking it,.. did not think it was as good as the Nikkor 35mm/1.8 .

sell or trade?
i think i'll keep mine and just feel good about the price i paid for it.

Hm, deserves a Leica Summicron its price?
As far as results are concerned? Hm...
I just bought a Pentax 3.5/35 SLR lens of the same vintage for 41 USD. Apart from speed, I wouldn't expect performance far below the Canon 2/35...
Performance/Compactness ratio? This is a better argument pro Canon 2/35...
At least from collectors standpoint, I would expect original caps for that amount.. experience tells cap-protected lenses often show better glass than others.
thats my comment on that.
cheers, Frank

Lens prices have no rhyme or reason. I also shoot with a Nikon F and NIkkormat FTn, I would like to get a 105/2.5 for the cameras to use, but the prices are going nuts and I think its purely the collectors not the users bidding this stuff up.
Now with Canon, I have their 50/1.4 and I shoot with that all the time with my Leica M3, to sound like a heritic I love using that lens.
