Canon 35/ 2 shade/ hood--CV?

Didn't somebody say here yesterday that the CV 40.0 mm shade/ hood did cause some problem (maybe like vignetting?) w/ his 35/ 2?

I asked a follow -up/ clarification question, but never got a reply. I'm dying to hear the bad news before I give Mr. Gandy some of my $$.

I only know that joe and djon use these hoods successfully on thier 35/2 lenses. I have considered getting one myself, maybe next time I order something big from Cameraquest I will have one thrown in the box.
 
As far as I understand Joe, the Gandy 40mm hood works on the Canon 2/35mm. I haven't tried but it looks quite nice and small on pictures.
I used to take the 1.5/50 Canon hood on it (have that lens too) but recently discovered it cuts the outer edges off (solely visible in not framed slides; never noticed with framed slides or color prints).
I would say, for critical applications, the 2/35 works best with a hood.
Probably the Canon 1.8/35 hood works best on the 2/35 because it has 40mm filter as well. But I have never seen one within 3 years in ebay.

My Gandy shade does not vignette by itself, but has one shortcoming...can't use it with filters because the combination will vignette. I do like to use UV filters for protection in a camera that's carried casually...and I also need a shade because of the high contrast light around here. The shade should have been designed for a filter that would screw INTO it, like the hood on the CV25 shade (which accepts standard Leica 39mm filters without vignetting). The arc of the shade cuts into the viewfinder to the 100mm frame, but it is an arc so it's only obstructing around 20% of the image...I find it acceptable.

A better design would allow a screw-in filter and would be vented so as to not interrupt the view.

The 40mm vented hoods made for the 50/1.8 (Walz/Hoya/Kenko, etc.) work without vignetting on the 35/2. However, per djon's post, they may vignette if used w/filters (don't know because I've never used both on the 35/2).

FYI: My recent "poll" of LUG members indicated that virtually NONE of them use filters (including UV) anymore (even w/ B&W film) for various reasons, including degradation of quality, flare, aberration, hassle, etc.

Actually I was surprised at this, but I'm now using my filters for unique, mini-coasters at parties. Kidding but still have eliminated them.
 
LUG does not necessarily relate to photography as she is practiced. 😉

The name of the game isn't simply maximum resolution: oddly enough photography sometimes involves getting an image that's worthwhile. To that end it can be useful to have a good front element, which is at risk in some situations (weather, perspiration, dust) when one doesn't have a UV filter installed. I'd rather clean a gnarly filter than a gnarly front element. LUG's mileage may vary. 😛
 
The CV shade for the 40mm Nokton snaps in place, I think. The one we're discussing is a screw-in shade...Canon doesn't accept a snap-on. I don't remember what I specified when I ordered the Gandy shade...it's hard to find on the website...JOE?
