Canon 40d anyone?

I think the AF improvements might be enough to make me do it. For wildlife, esp. birds in flight, I need as much as I can get in that department. Now I need to re-work the photography budget:bang:

I'll not be an early-adopter this time, though. I think...

Yep, I'm probably going for one after Christmas. I'll be getting a very nice pay check in December and now I know what to do with it! :)

Rumors are that Nikon is coming with a few new things on Friday, I'll be looking forward to that as well. Still haven't decided which brand to go for but I'm leaning heavily towards Canon...

Well if it's on Friday, I hope Nikon is going to announce a full frame camera. I have been waiting for that for too long now!

IS the 14bit picture new?
Is the use of cross type sensors new for the AF points other than the center one?

Live Preview is interesting, but the "silent modes" are more intriuging.
Finally auto ISO

Nice price, but what is it with bundling it with a 28-135 lens, nice lens (no doubt) but to me that is definately a FF camera lens, especially as a kit lens. They must be able to crank these out like crazy for a cheap cost of something. The full frame 5D kit lens is a 24-105, go figure. Still, lookslike it might be $300 less than a comparable 200D, or is the real competitor the D80?

I guess this is where we are now, not really an earth shattering. I think the 20D when it came out was a category killer, and held that till the D200 came out. I was expecting a D200 killer, and I really just see something that can compete with it, and has some cool features. How long has the 10MP Rebel been out?

I'm looking for more resolution and less noise, but that's me.

The faster FPS just cements to me Canon two tier track. Each track has a FF high quality/resolution camera and a crop high-frame-count/sports camera. At the high end you have the 1DsII and the 1DIII, at the lower end you now have the 5D and the 40D.

My guess is the 1DsIII will come out soon near 20MP, and the 6D(?) will come next year with around 16mp.

Yes, the 14bit is new as is the cross type sensors. This thing has more in common with the 1D mk III than the 400d, so I'm hoping it will have similar noise/iso as the 1D mk III.
Also new is swapable focus screens, the standard one, one with grid lines and one optimised for manual focus *grin*

A worthwhile upgrade in my book

Quite interested myself as I have an aging 20D that is starting to fall apart (if you can believe it with that solid machine) from overuse. Frankly im more interested in a 5D or M8 myself.

"Two new EF-S lenses are launched today in conjunction with the EOS 40D"

both are kit-type cheapo IS lenses. looks like camera built in IS systems (in other camera makes) is forcing Canon also to make this tech more affordable for their customers ?

Just read the article at dpreview, they addressed my wishes, bigger and brighter viewfinder! The rest is not so important for me :)

If the VF is really close to that from the 1D, then I might safe a lot of money by not buying a 5D. I already have the superwide lenses to replace the wide lenses I would want to use :)

The specs may be close to a 1D, but by the nature of having a smaller mirror, the 40D is still going to have a lot less nice VF then a 1Ds version. Yeah, it is an improvement, but since wouldn't you need near a 1.6x mag ratio on a crop camera to equal the image size of the 1Ds series, and then you'd be alot less bright? Just have fondled a 1Ds series, but I have a Canon F1N and I weep when I have to go back to the 20D viewfinder.

Interchangeable screens and a lot of other stuff, to me, make this the real 30D, while the 30D should have been the 20DmkII.

I really think that this is the camera Canon wanted to bring out when they brought out the 30D, but things just weren't ready yet. That and Canon seems to be taking the strategy of being the price leader. Slightly less camera for a lot less cash, especially when they first came out. (d200 vs 30D).

I've got 2MP-itis. If I get a 10MP 40D, I mine as well get a 12MP 5D. If I get a 5D, why not look for a nice used 1DsII.

Maybe I should just out and shoot more.

Yeah, but the 5d is sooooo expensive.

I have Contax SLRs, even from the "cheap" 167MT to a cropped EOS is hell for me. I once borrowed a friends EOS 3, that's what I would call a viewfinder. But I can live with the 1D MkII finder, that's standard PJ equipment here so I have ample opportunity to borrow them :)

Anyways, travel first, new body later! There are too many shots waiting for my Contax Gs. See? I can live with dim and small viewfinders :D

The 40D looks like it kicks ass.. Now all the reviews should compare the M8 to the 40D instead of the 5D.... even greater price/performance disparity..

Don't stand up too fast, you may hit your head on the bridge.
