Canon 50 1.2 LTM ... vexing infinity lock :(

Hi all,

I know it can be done, but I just don't know how ... my Canon 50/1.2 ltm has an unusual infinity lock (different from the usual knob and screw that is easily removable on the 50/1.4, rigid crons, 50/1.5 etc.).

Does anyone know to disable it? Any hints, instructions, or dare I be wildly hopeful, even some photos?

By "unusual," do you mean the flat, ribbed tab that's normally found on the 50/1.2? (see attachment 1.)

I took a look at mine, and it looks to be tougher than most -- the pivot point is inside the focusing ring (see attachment 2) so fairly significant disassembly would be needed to remove the screws that hold the tab in place.

If you don't mind a slightly barbarous but safe and reversible solution, how about depressing the tab and then slipping something into the space between it and the barrel to hold it open? (see attachment 3.)

I like the infinity lock and didn't want to disable it, but I tried this with a little piece cut from a rubber sheet to see if it worked, and it did. If you want to re-enable the infinity lock, you can just lift out your "blocker" with tweezers.

I find the Canon 50 f/1.2 's infinity lock very useful when unscrewing either from an LTM camera or from the LTM-to-M adapter.

You get used to it; I highly recommend you don't remove it.

I'll keep it on and try filling the groove with a piece of rubber like jlw suggested 🙂
