Hallo,

I was wondering whether anyone might be kind enough to post a pic or two of a Canon 50/1.4 mounted on a barnack body. I've done a search but the links to pics of this combination are all broken.

I'd also welcome any opinions on rangefinder blockage / general usage (viewfinder not so important as I use a externa

I have used the 50/1.4 Canon lens on my Leica IIIf with a SBOOI finder and it is ok, there is some rf image blockage but you can still focus the rf.
On Canon bottomloader bodies, the 50/1.4 is even less of a problem.

There is one in the previous thread:

that is a f1.5 lens, Brian has a pic of the f1.4 lens on his IIIf on an even earlier thread.

The Canon 50/1.4 is much bigger than the 50/1.5, and blocks about 1/3rd of the viewfinder. The Canon 50/1.5 does not intrude into it. The Canon 50/1.8 Chrome lens is "not bad", a bit bigger than the F1.5 lens. The chrome lens is tapered more than the later black lens.

Kully, I tried mounting a 50/1.4 on a IIIf and here are the results. On the left is the lens on the camera. Admittedly this quick close-up shot exaggerates the sense that the lens overwhelms the little camera a bit, but it's quite a change from the 35mm Summaron that usually lives on the IIIf. On the right is an attempt to capture the degree of obstruction of the viewfinder. This is the best I could do using my tiny Sony DSC-T5 to take a close-up through the viewfinder of the IIIf. (I aimed the camera at a white screen on my computer monitor.) As you can see, the lens intrudes substantially on the view. But to answer your original question, I saw no obstruction of the rangefinder whatsoever, and the rangefinder worked perfectly, as the lens didn't block the rangefinder-patch window either.

Michael, Jimi and Brian you're stars!

I'm now anticipating my 50/1.4 from Japan rather excitedly - although seeing those IIIf's is giving me a bad case of sellers remorse :) Ah well, the IIIa may not be as sophisticated but it soldiers on.

:) The IIIa is great, but I wish it had the 'shwoop' of the IIIf shutter rather than it's 'cal-unk'.

In terms of weight the canon 50/1.4 balances perfectly with the IIIf, like a good kitchen knife, right between the body and the focus ring. The lens blocks a lot of the onboard viewfinder, but it doesn't affect the rangefinder. You are in for a real treat. Try shooting some Velvia with a tripod or at high shutter speeds to get a taste of what a seriously sharp, hi-res lens this is.

Thanks Joe - read your post yesterday and have Velvia at the ready :) Should be getting the lens today.
