Hello folks,

I have a Canon 50 f 3.5 collapsable lens (like the f 1.9 but slower and more uncommon). I'd dearly like to try the lens out but there is a little cloudiness in the rear element group.

I took the lens apart to see about cleaning it, and the cloudiness is between the two rear elements that are in a small brass barrel that has no retaining rings or other apparent method of holding the elements in place, so I presume the elements are press-fit or possibly cemented into the little barrel.

Is there someone out there with the experience and tools to get the elements removed and cleaned without damage to them or the barrel? Can anyone recommend a shop that is known to have done a similar repair?

Thanks,

---Michael

Hmm. That's a cemented element - if the haze really is where you say it is, that's a major bit^h^h^h^h hassle to fix. First thing I'd suggest is an email to DAG/Don Goldberg at dagcam@chorus.net He's the only one that I've used that I would trust with that lens.

Good luck.

William,

I don't think it's cemented, it looks like it is air-spaced. However, I don't see a way to get the elements apart without damage to the barrel assembly, which is my primary concern. That's why I thought I'd ask if anyone has had success with a repair liuke this before searching all around.

I figured DAG might come up as a possible. I'll email him to see.

That is the cemented group in that lens. It is noted for being prone to failure of the cement. Perhaps DAG can recement it. I know that S.K.Grimes or Focal Point Lens could do it.

It's a valuable lens in usable condition (a few hundred dollars). So the cost might be justified.

Ok, thanks for the input. It sounds like the better repair shops should be able to do the repairs. I'll contact DAG for starters and see what they have to say.

Kim,

I've heard about their service, and it sounds interesting. I will need someone to remove the elements from the rear group barrel first, as it appears to be something mor than I can handle with my tools on hand.

I'm determined to get the lens working nicely, though, so I'll see what I can do about getting it apart after I've emailed a few repair places.
