Canon 50mm 1.4

Hey guys,

I've heard a lot of you recommend this as a good budget option lens for the Bessa. I've been having a bit of trouble making sure I've found the right one though on the web.

Could someone tell me, is this the right one;

If so, does that price seem fair?

I'm not sure if it is the right one because when I looked at "Canon FD lens" on wikipedia, it says FD lenses can be used with LTM rangefinders by using the Canon lens mount adapter 'B', but rangefinder-coupled focusing is lost. Does this mean it won't be able to focus if it is used non-digitally?

If you are talking about the rangefinder Canons then this is not an RF lens. This lens in the link is for a SLR Canon camera. Will it work, probably with an adapter, but then it will be at stop down exposure each time you take a picture, certainly not useful if you are using it on a rangefinder camera. The Canon RF 50/1.4 is way more money than this one and if that is too much check out the 50/1.8 which is excellent and not as expensive. Hope this helps.

I have both the 50mm 1.4 and the 1.8. For the price, I feel that the 1.8 would be hard to beat. I took the picture in my sig with a 1.8 with a yellow filter on a Canon L1. There is a larger version in my gallery, but I am not sure how to display it in line here.

If you need the extra speed, and would like more contrast, you might find that the VC Nokton 1.5 is similar in price and can also supply superb results.

Old Russian LTM lenses can be fine, too. Look at this link:

Brian Sweeney gave me some advice on these and I got a J3 that has turned out to be wonderful in its own way. Good luck on your search. This stage in the process can be almost as much fun as taking the pictures.

That adapter is useful for wide angle lenses like 19mm to use on leica mount cameras as the focusing is not an issue for that wide lenses due to dof.

I'd heard this mentioned as a budget lens, which I suppose it still is in the crazily priced world of lenses. It is however still a bit much for me as I've just gone back to university and don't have spare cash floating around. I currently have an Industar 2.8 on my Bessa R3a, and it just doesn't seem to cope well enough in low light, particularly at some gigs I've been to with bad lighting.
I might give a reasonably fast Jupiter 8 2.0 a go, to see how that fairs until I have enough for something a little better.
