Is this rangefinder lens as good as some say it is?
According to the Canon website there are 3 versions of it. One chrome and 2 black. How do you tell which is which or the better one??

as far as I know the primary difference in the versions is cosmetic/ergonomic. All have 6 elements in 4 groups.
The chrome one is earliest - very fine. 1.8-22, 10 aperture blades. (I own this one)
Black vII - 1.8-22, 9 aperture blades.
Black vIII - 1.8-16, 9 aperture blades.

For the time being I'm using my Leica Summarit f/1.5 lens on my Canon P. I bid and won a vII black on the &%#@*bay then won the Canon hood to go with it on another auction..

I own a Canon 50mm f/1.8 Chrome as well, I really love it.
This is one of the shots taken on Delta 3200.
It seems rather sharp too. Albeit on the heavy side, but that matches the weight of my Canon P

?? I have a chrome 1.8-16 (NOT 22), 10 aperture blades !?!
Oh, and also counted the blades on my black, 1.8-22: 8 blades?? Are we talking about the same lenses??

How odd - I was using the Canon Museum's information - but double checking my chrome - it is a 10 blade, 1.8-16 as well. My apologies. I don't own any of the black versions to double check those. Perhaps there was variation between the Serenar and Canon named versions?

Apparently even Canon themselves have problems with their inventory...

I have both black one. Can someone give me a good reason for not getting a chrome one, please. I always want a chrome.

The chrome ones are heavier, if you want an excuse not to buy them.

I have tested mine [chrome version] many times in my tests of 50mm lenses, and each time RFF members pick out the images taken by it as excellent images. I have never let me down. It simply is not an "exiting" lens, but you get a 50mm lens that is made extremely well and with great optics at a rather low price. It is an excellent lens for scenics and for portraits since it is sharp across the image and not like a Sonnar design lens. At the same time, it is not surgically sharp, showing the microscopic pimples on peoples' faces.

Now I've counted almost 5 times now, but my chrome 50mm f/1.8 has 11 blades.
Correction, 10.
Mine got some oil like substance on the blade, so I just picked one with the biggest ammount, and just use that as the starting point on the count.

This thread made me realize how many 50's are laying about. Anyone need a body cap? There's also a couple of Jupiters and a Summicron... somewhere...
I'd be happy to releive you of one of the gritty Canon body caps...

I'm looking at my black lens that goes to f22, with 11 blades.

If you visit my earlier threads on comparing 50mm lenses you will see that the chrome Serenar 50mm/1.8 did very well against more expensive 50mm lenses.
