My canon 7 has become my favorite camera. It’s starting to show its age. Who do you recommend for a good CLA? I’d like to keep it around for another 40 years or so.

Ha, I tried to take my newly purchased 7 to a popular guy who does CLAs in NYC. He looked at me funny and was like "Why do you want to tamper with it? Is it working OK?" It was, and has been, so I didn't bother. But I get the impression that he was saying it wasn't worth the work on an economy camera.
So my plan is to beat the hell out of this one, and then when it comes time for a cleaning, just buy a brand new one on eBay for about that price. 🙂

Check out the Cameraquest website. Also KEH does repairs/CLA's. Note though, it wont be cheap.

Ummm .. I'd prefer to hope your man in NYC is saying, "If it isn't demonstrating faults, its working ok.. for now. Come back when you see the shutter speeds slowing." Almost any camera of the age of these Canon rangefinders will need a CLA sooner or later.. and the one you buy in 10 years is gonna need it more than it does today. If CLA's been done recently to the camera you buy, all to the good. If the camera works well enough - fine. But I consider a CLA to be part of the price. If you're bottom-scraping, expect to ante up the $150 for a CLA -- or more, if it has other faults. Or pay more upfront for better condition and recent maintenance. It's part of the equation, laddie.

Don Goldberg (DAG Camera Repair) fixed and CLA'd a Canon IIf for me once. I think he can do all screwmount Canons. Probably the most expensive, but will be the best possible. I have no idea how much is would cost. My IIf went to him a few years back and I think it was only 100-150 $US.

Agreed - Don is top-notch for Leica and Minox, but I wasn't certain he worked on Canon. Glad to hear that he does. Oddly enough his website only discusses Parts (which DOES include Canon RF parts, so that could've been a clue, eh??) Call or email him for repair info.

None, however, are cheap. Of the three, I’ve used Mark Hama before and he does great work. I have always sent my Leicas to Sherry Krauter, so I don’t have any experience with the others. If anyone has had an experience with DAG or Cameraquest, I’d like to hear about it.

Stephen Gandy's repair tech CLA'd my Canon L1 a few years back. Before that, I had him overhaul my old Nikon M which needed a lot of work (gummed up shutter, cloudy lens, etc.). In both cases, the cameras came back looking and operating like they were brand new.

DAG did a CLA on my Canon 7 a couple of years ago, and, of course, superb work.
