When I've shot a roll to the end and am just starting to wind the film back into the spool the shutter releases. This is with the advance lever halfway cocked. Is this normal? Am I just being dumb trying to get that 25th exposure? 😱

Whenever you turn the advance/rewind collar to the rewind position, it unlatches the shutter curtains and allows them to travel back to their uncocked position to relieve tension on the shutter springs. This sounds exactly like a shutter release. Are you sure that's not what you're hearing?

(Some people feel you should cover the lens to eliminate the risk of film fogging when the curtains are de-tensioned, but I've never had any trouble with this.)

Yes, that's exactly what's happening.

The shutter isn't opening when I hear that shutter noise?

It shouldn't be, if your shutter is working correctly. Both curtains return to the de-tensioned position at the same time, so they shouldn't be opening.

If you're worried about fogging, you might want to try watching it a few times with an empty camera. I suppose that if the shutter were a bit gummy, there might be a risk of the curtains opening up a bit when they return. It's never happened to me, though.
