Canon 8800F - white area at base of image

I've scanned a few hundred images using a Canon 8800F (and MP Navigator) but find that quite often, the images from the first row of 6 negatives has a white rectangle included at the base of the image.
Has anyone else experienced this?
If so, have you resolved the problem?

Could it just be an error by the autocropping function? This is very common with all scanners. Why not just manually crop? I am working on some new film holder prototypes for this Canon scanner and I looks like autocropping on the Canon isn't any better than on the Epsons.

Could be, Doug. It only ever happens on the first 6 negatives in the holder. I've tried using Elements 5 which comes with the scanner, but get the same results as with MP Navigator. Could be that they both use the same low-level driver.
I could do manual cropping using SilverFast, but MP Navigator is just so convenient as it gets the cropping right most of the time.

You did remove the white cover from the lid of the scanner, right? It's the white insert that is removed when you scan negatives. Just this past weekend, I had to scan some prints for a friend and had to re-insert the white piece into the lid.

That white looks very similar.

I think that the whole image would come out white if the cover were still in place, as it would block all the light from the strip on the inside of the lid.
