I have a variety canon lens but have never owned or even used a auto-up. Are they any good or just a gimmick? Is there an advantage for old tired eyes like mine?

I have an Auto-Up attachment for my 50mm F1.2 Canon lens. For getting closer-up, yes it is useful. And seems plenty sharp, too. Like a giant diopter version on the Leitz Dual-Range Summicron. It really does work, since it couples with the rangefinder in my Canon 7/7s.

Auto up

Thanks I have a 50 1.8 and though to finance an auto up by selling some unused cameras & lenses if they really worked.

I had a 50mm f1.9 collapsible with auto up. It worked quite well on my RD1. Here is a sample. I could have used more DOF but, the focus is where I put it. Learning to frame is a bit of a curve. You''l get it with practice. Make sure you get an auto up that goes with your lens and camera. The one for my 50 f1.9 did not work with my Canon 7 or ay other camera I had other than the RD1. Canon had a few. Heres that sample.

My Canon 450 Auto-Up.

My Canon 450 Auto-Up.

Here is my 450 Canon Auto-Up mounted on my 50mm F1.2 and 7S.

When the price was reduced from $200 to $65, I pulled the trigger.

I was led to a deal on an auto-up for my 50 1.8 canon lens, but hey I don't have a canon 1.5 but Do own a J-3 and a CZJ 5cm 1,5. Would a Canon auto-up work with these lenses? and if so will it aid me in adjusting a lens after re-lubing & cleaning? I use Canon RF's mostly. Is there a "universal" auto-up?

They were made for specific lenses, so I think the short answer is "no".
Canon made specific Auto-Ups, matched to their RF lenses and bodies.

Although there are many different Auto-Ups, I don't think they are universal or interchangable.

Did you buy the one for your 50mm F1.8? It clamps onto the front of the lens filter ring. It allows you to focus much closer, like a screw-in diopter close-up lens would, on a 35mm SLR. The camera's rangefinder is fully functional in close-up mode, thanks to the Auto-Up attachment.

Auto-up

The Auto-up I'm waiting for is for a 1.8 Canon lens. After seeing the results of one on the 1.9 50mm I can only hope. My cameras already take better pictures than I can. .. ... but I keep practicing. Did the Germans/Russians make any Auto-up type close-up aids for the 5cm 1,5 lenses?
Oh, I do not have an auto-up for my 50mm 1.9 col. only one on the way for the1.8 ser.

I don't know, my RF 35 interest right now is only Canon.

I wouldn't be surprised if Auto-Up-like attachments were available from Zeiss?

Anybody?
