Another catalog curiousity, this from a '62 Bell & Howell/Canon (not that other B&H :^) USA-market/English-language brochure. Specs for the wideangle lenses all read "Built-in Lens Hood." Lenses shown are:

25/3.5
28/3.5
28/2.8
35/2.0
35/1.8
35/1.5

There are no hoods for these lenses listed in the accessory section; the entry for each under the "Hood" column reads "Built-in." These lenses don't have built-in/extendable hoods, so "Built-in" can only refer to their fairly deeply-recessed front elements.

I would assume that Bell & Howell would want to sell accessory hoods for these lenses if they were available, and I would also assume that Canon Japan would be unhappy if Bell & Howell were incorrectly telling the US market that accessory hoods were unavailable and unnecessary. So it appears that Canon specifically designed these lenses with recessed front elements so that no hood was necessary or provided.

I apologize if this is very old news. I can remember seeing comments here along the lines of "hood not really necessary due to deep front element" or "hard to find filter or hood that won't vignette," but I guess I didn't realize that this was evidently a deliberate design decision by Canon. Live & learn....
