Canon EOS 5D Mark III Released

B&H has it for preorder already but the price is HIGH compared to the 5DII. I bought my 5DmkII at B&H in January for $2799, which was for the kit with the 24-105L-IS lens. The new 5DmkIII with that lens is $4299. Actually, I see they've raised the 5DmkII up to $3199. I'm glad I got it when I did! I don't think the mark III offers enough to justify another $1500 over what I spent on the Mark II. If I did sports or wildlife the better AF might be worth it, but I do mostly architecture and landscapes.

Sure, Chris, I hear you. Great timing on your part though. And as you say the Mark II is not lacking in image quality; sometimes good enough, is good enough, yes?
Regards
Brett

My original/classic/MkI 5D is fine for my needs, and it hasn't got any worse for now being doubly superseded. Sure, I'd like some of the newer features but I think I'll get by for now with "good enough", not upgrading 'till I have a compelling use for something new.

Yep and this has to be the most well rounded camera that canon has possibly ever made.
At this point I'll finally be upgrading my original 5d in about 3-4 months to this one, and then I'll be shooting that as my main cam for the next 5-6 years.
Very excited as the 5d line is lovely to start with, and they've gone and upgraded the one thing that needed to be upgraded - and they did it properly (the AF).

I really really like my 5DII but very seldom use it. I still have a slight case of GAS for the new III but I'll suspect I can wait a year or three.

It is however a very impressive camera, at least on paper. A tool that seems made to give everything it can to get you to get the shoot regardless of light and movement.

I just picked up a low mileage used 5D2 - sold my 5D last July and regretted it. The 5D3 does seem to fix most of the gripes (general, not mine) about the 5D2, but at a much higher price than the Nikon D800. I'm more than happy with the 5D2 (was happy with the 5D) so I won't be rushing to acquire this.

dpreview is most amusing at the moment with much wailing and gnashing of teeth. There have been calls for better AF, 100% VF, weather sealing etc since the 5D2 was launched (but no calls for more MP). Now Canon has delivered exactly that, but it has fewer MP and costs more than the D800, so the world of the Canon fickle has just come to an end.😀 I sometimes wonder if any of them actually take photographs on a regular basis. They may of course be too busy with school and homework 😉

Yeah dpreview is just hilarious. Any time a new camera is released from any manufacturer, no matter how good, there is this chorus of whiners that just fills up the forums with rabid hatred toward the product. I almost feel sorry for the manufacturers if this is the new generation of 'photographers'!

i was beginning to wonder if a thread would ever be made about this camera! 🙄

the price is steep, especially for those of us outside the US, but i've already preordered. supposedly the first shipment will be on the 22nd. 🙂

to be honest, i would have been happy with "just" the Mark II had its AF been better. i really need accurate & fast AF in low light settings. all of the camera's other features are just icing on the cake. 🙂 this camera is my dream digital camera (minus size & weight).

thank god Canon didn't significantly up the MP like Nikon.

I use the 5DII usually with Zeiss lenses (bought from Popflash, a RFF sponsor) thus improved AF is not a requirement for me. I would upgrade for increased megapixels but am not sure I can justify the expense otherwise.

Think I'm going to hunt for a MkII clearance. I had been saving for the X1Pro but a 5DII is a better fit for my needs.

glad to see this has arrived. and smaller package too. who knows maybe 5D Classic prices drop again few hundred 🙂

I wonder if Canon improved the dynamic range and the shadow noise at low ISOs (when pushing shadows)?

am just guessing after quick look on Dpreview + fanfare over at POTN, that DR should be improved quite a bit.

Cool. But of course I'll wait for lots of other people to find out on my behalf and write about it before I even think of spending $3500!

I wonder if Canon improved the dynamic range and the shadow noise at low ISOs (when pushing shadows)?

Canon's tech adviser Chuck Westfall tells USA Today that there is a 2 stop improvement in noise. (video)

in a hands-on preview, Planet 5D claims a two stop improvement in both noise reduction and ISO.

Canon ambassador Jeff Ascough got to have the Mark III for two weeks and claims overall image quality to be +2 stops with "extremely low noise" and "fabulous dynamic range".

and lastly, here's a thread on the Canon Rumors Forum discussing the Mark III's shadow recovery.

.....sorry. i've spent far too much time on Canon Rumors lately. 😱 and i lied. one more link.

If I remember prices correctly, a 5D3+24L II+50/1.4 kit will cost almost exactly what a D800+24G+50/1.4G kit is going to cost.

Glad I'm not in the market for a DSLR, I really don't know how I'd make a choice between those two setups.

The lack of interchangeable screens (I, II, yes; III, no) would be a deal-killer if I were in the market for one of these.
