Canon is showing a new fw update to improve af performance. Now it is maybe around fuji x100 speed but not x100s. Eos-m w/ the pancake is a pretty small package.

It's interesting how nice looking and well built the camera is, yet with a dearth of controls. It's basically for green box mode only by its appearance.

I would not write this system off just yet. It may be missing all kinds of features, but the body looks pretty well made. It feels solid with good ergonomics (in my opinion) and less consumer-producty than for instance the nex cameras. I think canon is also pitching it at the video market, as it has a standard microphone input, which is not common on cameras this size.

Are u saying poor af even after the fw update is released. The utube video doesn't look too bad to me.

I picked one up at the new, lower price last week (with the pancake lens). Just applied the firmware update yesterday and the autofocus is improved markedly. The build quality is excellent -- a cut above the competition. And, while I'm not a fan of touch screens, I find this one as easy to use as my iPhone. If I want a viewfinder, I'll use one of my cameras that has a real one. This camera meets my criteria of a pocketable device with high IQ (higher than the GF-1 that is now retired).

Same here! I just picked up a EOS-M in black (black has a different, better finish than the other three colors) with the kit zoom lens for 389€. The pancake EF-M 22mm f/2.0 and a couple of extra 875mAh Li-ion batteries are on the way from Hong Kong.
What I like is the extremely small size, the build quality of both body and lens, the shutter sound, responsive touch screen and some of the software features, such as face recognition, object tracking and "night shot without tripod". This is also one of the few mirrorless APS-C compacts with an external microphone jack (good for those wireless mics I still have).
After the 2.0.2 firmware update I think the AF speed is just fine for most situations. The cam has an AF assist lamp as well and if you hold it with thumb and index on both sides you probably wont be mistaken for a pro or terrorist. The small flash unit that comes with the kit is also a wireless master for other off-camera canon flashes. I'll be getting FD and Leica M-mount adapters initially followed by Contax-G and Nikon at a later point.
Probably when the price gets low enough and more EF-M lenses are introduced this will become a bit more successful than it has been so far.

Okay the Canon M just went on sale for $299 including the 20/2 (32 FOV) lens. So I am thinking......some lust for the Sony R1 with Zeiss 35/2 lens for $2800. I know, I know Full Frame but my eyes can not tell the difference. Hmmm $299 or $2799. PUNCH I just ordered the Canon!!

It is a good price when u are considering the complete package and the fw update. I am not interested but I sent the info to a bunch of my friends just in case.

From what I've read, the controls are very limited and the sensor just isn't up to the competition, especially in low light performance.
The price is tempting at $300 with the 22mm EF-M lens but even though I have some Canon lenses, I am going to pass.

It seems the FW update and cheap price has made a big difference in opinions.

Mine showed up, early, ordered from Amazon for $299. It's built really well, and I can't believe how solid the 22mm lens feels.
The battery is being charged, but I'm really impressed with the hardware/camera aspect.
