99$ small adaptor and you have AF pancake 40 2.8 EF . Canon doesn't need to have small lenses as priority because of it. 50 1.8 is also small and light. You could get new YN 35/2 small and cheap AF EF lens.

If you are Canon long time and for real user it makes sense what they have done. Professional lenses. Camera is weather sealed and so are lenses. Nobody has 28-50 F2 lens and 50 1.2 update was long time due to. Not to mention classic workhorse 24-105. Professionals are using it still.

It is Canon L glass which made Canon successful. Big size, but every time I look at pictures with these lenses I'm realizing what Leica is blaff.

Sony 24-70 2.8 is 886 g - mirrorless camera lens.
Canon EF 24-70 is 805 g - DSLR lens.
Sony 24-105 is 663 g - mirrorless lens.
Canon 24-105 IS is 700 g - mirrorless lens.
Leica 35 f 2 is 255 g - mirrorless lens.
Canon 35 IS f1.8 is 305 g - mirrorless lens.
Sony Planar T* FE 50mm f/1.4 is 778g - mirrorless lens.
Canon 50 1.2 R is faster 905 g - mirrorless lens.
So lets not pretend here it is just Canon doing something wrong.

I haven't really paid much attention other than casually checking out the new cameras and lenses briefly online. Both the new systems look like they will be really good. But everything is really good these days. Since I've used both Canon and Nikon in the past, I still have several lenses for both systems that would fit using adapters. But the whole full frame mirrorless thing just sorta leaves me flat. I can't get that excited about the new Nikon or Canon, the old Sony or the possible/probable Panasonic. Again, I'm sure they're all great cameras.

Going to larger sized sensors with more megapixels for me means the computer is burdened with slower processing and likely needs more memory. More storage capacity will eventually be necessary as well. The cameras and lenses, while still rather small, keep getting larger and heavier (and more expensive). I just can't get excited about all that.

I'm happy with APS-C, even M4/3. They are more than adequate, actually exceptional, for the types of pictures I take. I'm not into chasing ultimate image quality. If I were, I would bypass full frame anyway and jump into medium format.

Business for Nikon and Canon? I mean, someone is always the best (not that I think Sony is the best), but there are always many manufacturers taking up the rest of the pie pieces and making money.

I have been looking at Z7 images and personally I am not impressed with that sensor at all and especially at that price point.

What did you expect and what was wrong? You don`t have to spend the money...it is yours. I understand that. But all of these latest cameras are pretty damn nice and will al be capable of great photographs. Most cameras are these days. Seems people are spoiled expecting every single modern spec in every single body...

I agree! 35mm is by far my favorite focal length for general snapshooting, though anything up to 40 will do if necessary. I've used the 5D IV with the 35/2 IS, and although it's a very capable combination, for my taste it's too big and heavy for comfortable walkaround snapshooting. The R / 35/1.8 IS combination looks like it will provide the same basic imaging capability in a package that's substantially smaller, lighter and less expensive. The 40/2.8 STM on the EF-to-R adapter should work well too, and that combination will be even smaller and cheaper.

Absolute dud for me. Touch bar thing is gimmicky. Lenses will be amazing performers but stupidly expensive and big. Single card slot. Eye AF only works in S-AF. Sensor is same as 5dIV. Design is ugly IMO. 4k video is a 1.7 crop. Dial on the left shoulder is just a on/off switch - waste of valuable realestate.

Makes me feel even happier with my Fujis. X-T3 is going to be a bargain for what it gives.

In all the conversations I've had about mirrorless, the main reason to switch is weight. Lighter and more compact. Less to pack around. On and on, so why are we stuck with these humongous lenses? I understand that they need to be AF for the masses but can't they design something more compact?

It's the old trade off. Larger aperture lenses are bigger and heavier. Look at the new f/2 zoom and the new f/4 zoom. The former is twice the weight of the latter. Larger dimensions also. Nothing new under the son.

With high ISO improving on a fairly regular basis, an all around lens like the 24-105/4 will satisfy many people and meet the goals of small and light.

Well I expected transformation...I expected my beloved F2 in digiform. I expected a no mirror Df. And after reading Gavins take on the Canon ^ Ill say the about the same thing concerning the eosr with the caveat at least it makes nicer to my eyes images than the Z cameras. (At half the cost) Gee didnt Nikon learn anything from the one?

What a bust for the big boys. Maybe Sony holds both of thems whistles??? Lol talk about conspiracy theories.

Now onto the FF no mirror Pentax offering. Im feeling good about this one. 🙂

Leica and the rangefinder continue to hold the belt. Fuji and Oly (maybe Pany) look to be the revolution. The big boys are looking jaded and faded like Kodak.

One other thing. My opinion again. Dedicated still cameras are somewhat obsolete. For thousands of my hard earned dollars give me capability not megapixels and marketing snake oil.

Nikon has lost. My opinion.

The 50mm f1.2 looks ridiculously sharp. Some of those portraits seemed like they would be better off with a softer lens.

Lagniappe in the form of a story about a 40 something blond milf I met in a bar a few months back. She asked about my camera. I gave her the rundown. She says I have a camera too...my husband bought it for me for Christmas. I think he paid 4 grand. I ask her what kind? She said Sony. I said lets go somewhere quieter where we can talk. To me the biggest thing with the EOS-R is the backward compatibility with almost every EF lens (just a couple of obscure special models not included). Or at least it would be if I owned any EF lenses. But with the three adapters, there is a lot of functionality added to those same EF lenses so they can act just like the R lenses.


Beyond that, I didn't see much on the six videos I watched today to get me to think it was a Nikon beater system. Or even a loser to Nikon. I even started wondering if they hired the same company to produce their videos.

Huh. Everything I've seen shows that Canon has dropped a clunker. Uses a sensor that was outdated when it was released 2 years ago. No IBIS. Handicapped video - only does 4K at 1.8x cropped. 720p slo-mo. Rolling shutter issues etc etc.
At least it's cheaper than the better performing Sonys and Nikons. Oh wait, it's not.

The main outcome of Canon’s announcement is that rangefinder lenses shouldn’t be called RF lenses anymore.
