canon f1.8/50mm old and new optical blocks

Does anybody know if it's possible to put the optical parts of the Canon f.1.8's latest version (the one with black body) into the body of the first version (the heavier chrome one).

In other words, do the lenses have the same dimensions?

There's actually two black body versions, and they don't seem to have the same dimensions (length).
