Canon G1X II

hmmm, seems to really be straying from the original g line, which was directed to people who wanted control with an iso dial, EC dial, and front wheel. they got rid of the tunnel viewfinder too, which i can't say is a big loss, lol. i'm sure it can take nice pics with its big sensor and improved lens, though.

If I am reading the specs correctly, is it pretty much a fixed zoom camera with m4/3 sensor (size wise)?
12.5 - 62.5mm (eq. FL 24 - 120mm)
12.8MB (3:2 aspect ratio), 13.1MB (4:3 aspect ratio)

I have the G1X and the lens is really good. Can't believe that the new 2.0-3.9 lens reaches the optical performance of the current 2.8-5.8 lens.

good point, i should have said "faster" lens, it's not yet clear whether it's an improvement optically.

the g1x sensor is slightly larger than m43, but not as big as apsc. so, it seems fair to say it's similar to an m43 with a fixed zoom.

in the best buy picture there is a top down view with two separate hand grips which is pretty good. although there are fewer dials, the touch screen and double function rings should alleviate that to certain extent.

this could be a really great travel camera: leaf shutter, built in flash, hopefully improved af and manual video controls

i missed the function rings around the lens, those should help. the touchscreen should be good if it's anything like the one on the eos m, although personally i would still prefer a few dials like the rest of the g series.

i saw a brief mention of an add-on EVF, and it looks like there might be a port for it under the hotshoe.

Shame about the loss of vf (though the ovf on my G11 is a bit tiny), but those programmable control rings are a bit tasty. I enjoy having the one ring on my XZ-1. Two gives a great number of possibilities. I speak as someone who started photography with an OM-1, having shutter speed, aperture, zoom and focus all easily and swiftly adjusted with the left hand. I also had a Werra, which has the wind action in the lens collar, too. Splendid direction of travel, but I don't think I'm going back Canon-wards.

What I would have given for a camera like this in 2006-2009! I've owned the S45, S70, G7, G10 and S90. The G10 was the best of those in terms of image quality and flexibility, but a near-aps-c sensor coupled with a f2 lens is a league way ahead. I balked at the G1X because of reports of its slowness; if the G1X II takes up that slack, it may be my new camera for 2014.

If it has an EVF accessory, that makes it a great camera.

What was really good about the G11 was:
OVF (OK, it was a bit token)
Fold out screen
Direct user control (knobs!)
