Hello.

For this charity book I'm working on, I'm going to be sleeping rough and getting into some rough situations in terms of weather. So I'm looking for a camera that will a: cope and b: help me out at 3am in the rain when I'm too cold and tired to focus for myself.

I was thinking of an EOS 1V with appropriate lenses, say prime 28, 35 and 50mm. I'm not a Canon boy, never owned one. So I need lens advice. I'll be working close, I need fast focus, and I'd prefer them not to sound like a train wreck while moving the elements. 🙂

If you want the full effect of weather sealing you'll need sealed lenses which limits you to the 24mm f1.4L II, the 50mm f1.2L, the 24-105mm f4L and the 24-70mm f2.8L/16-35mm f2.8L and 17-40mm f4L. You can use the cheaper primes but they're not weathersealed. I've used non-weathersealed primes like the 50mm f1.4 and 35mm f2 in rain before quite a bit and never had a problem.

The 1v is one of the best canon slr's made, and very very tough. Keep in mind you can buy a 1n for about $100 and they're sealed (though not as well as the 1v) and are still great cameras. Both are reliable as hell.

If you want to have an ultimate setup the 24L II and the 50L are some of the best lenses available in the focal lengths, and both sealed. The 35L isn't sealed unfortunately, but I've used one in the rain without problems.

Hello.

Thanks, that's very helpful. I've decided to get the 1V as a: it's the 1V and b: I am getting sponsored for this and with it's superior sealing it'll hold out where the 1N may fail. The 1N probably never would, but I don't want to risk it. And both are cheap really, I could get a 1N to go along with the 1V as a backup at that price.

I'm really looking forward to shooting these cameras 🙂

I own the 28 f/1.8, the 50 f/1.4 and the 24-105f/4. All are truly great. Of the three, the 28 is the quietest and quickest to focus. The zoom is also very quick and quiet as long as the IS is turned off. Turned on it has occasional audible clicks. The 50 is, however, a truly beautiful lens, well worth its modest price. The only downside is it's antiquated focusing mechanism. I don't think its a true ring-type USM but the older arc-type that is just a tad slower and louder than the 28. It's not slow or loud per se, just in comparison w the 28.
