Canon IV questions

The Canon IV just keeps doing cool things for me!
Somewhat OT but:
We have recently hired a new bartender where I work.After work yesterday, we got to taliking and she asked me about the Canon IV. I waxed poetic about it and that I'm not shooting digital etc, etc, blah,blah. She tells me that she's got an "old Canon" she'll bring into work sometime so I can see it. I say cool. And think nothing more about it.
Today when she gets to work, she hands me a largish camera bag and says "enjoy".
I say"what?" she says"if you want it, it's yours." So I am now a happy owner of a Canon AE-1 and some assorted accys and three lenses.
I did tell her what I've seen these selling for and her take on it was that she'd rather see someone she knows use it.
I am going to make her a good matted and framed print of somehting I take with it.
The benefits from the IV-sb are just amazing!

I see in another thread that you're shooting one as well. Yes, they are very nice little machines!
Mine does have some issues and will need to be sent away for a CLA but that will take some strength on my part since I'd rather not be seperated from this camera.
But, since it's not 100% working, the minor problems are going to prod me into getting the work done. Unlike some of my FSU cameras--where I would be happy to keep using as is.

I just gave mine to a camera repairman to check out why after taking12 exposures, the camera feels like jammed or "full". Else, it sounds very smooth. I have only taken two rolls with it so far. I am not ready [yet] to invest in it $200 for a total CLA.

I have one just like yours. It had a couple of holes in the curtain, the speeds were off, and it was dirty. After 10 days and $ 210, it arrived in beautiful shape from DAG, and works flawlessly. Since the curtain itself is about $35, the CLA alone should be a bit less...

The Canon IVsb is as nice a nice Leica rangefinder camera from its time. My IVsb has a very nice sounding shutter sound. It sounds as smooth as butter to my ears. I gave up my beloved mint Canon VI-L for an older Standard Leica to experience a very old camera.

Too bad you have a jammed or "full" shutter. Did you at least get any feedback from the second roll?

I once had a roll of film split right down the middle lengthwise. It jammed up the works. It started from a spot where I nicked the film edge while cutting the leica leader.

Both rolls of film stopped moving at around exposure twelve. I gave the lens to my trusted camera repairman so that he could evaluate the situation and advise me.

I just want to concur that the Fed 2 trim ring fit my Canon IIf perfectly, and should fit all of the bottom loaders. Could not believe the thread was the same; but it is! I ended up buying some parts Fed 2's; one will be nursed back to health, one ring on my IIf; and the third is off to another RFF'r.

Mental Note: Buy Parts FED 2's.

I'm certainly willing, and when I got mine I had the aproximate $ available. Now, though, that money has gone for something else so I need to get the funds organized. Then the camera will go to DAG.
Subhash, that ten days you mention(as well as their general good reputation) is a big reason why I'm sending the camera to DAG. The other points you spoke to in your earlier post are interesting and I agree about the usefulness of the VF for 50 and longer lenses.
I was a little worried about the bottom loading but after reading the manual and loading just how the instructions said, I'm not anymore. If I have cut the film leader ahead of time, the actual loading is only slightly slower than my other RF cameras. Though I do begin to understand why folks carry two cameras.
I can feel what this camera will be like when it's 100% so I don't mind the expense. The time away from me will be hard but I'll survive. 😀

The seller "Alex Photo" on ebay usually has parts cameras for sale. I've bought some things from him/her before and been happy with what I got so I emailed to ask about FED2 RF trim rings and the response was "I can sell you that part for $10(US) shipping included". So I have a ring for my IVsb on its way to me and soon the camera and lenses will be heading off to DAG! 😀

I never did actually send the camera off to DAG for CLA, I ended up selling it here at RFF for a small profit that I turned into some other camera gear. I think it was for the Canon P that just didn't suit me*.
My decision to part with the camera was based on the quote I got from DAG for the CLA on the camera and lenses. It was going to be almost three times what I paid for the camera for the CLA. Dumb a$$ me, I thought that was too much. After the fact, I found out that there wee a cuople of other choices who would have been much less money for the work.

Now it is three years later and I'm: 1) kicking myself in the butt for selling the IVsb and 2) starting to scope out what's around and for how much; I want another IVsb:bang:

And for the same kit--IVsb + 50mm + 85mm--in good, working condition, I will pay just about what the kit I had plus the needed work would have cost me.

The lesson here is either never sell anything or go slow. OR "love the one you're with".
I can't really complain too much, the Bessa R has been fun and still is.
