Canon L1

I venture to ask if any member can assist with an answer to the following questions.

1) Will a black Jupiter8 register accurately on a Canon L1?

2) Will a black Jupiter12 mate successfully with a Canon L1 and if so does it register
accurately on the camera?

3) What are shooters using as a substitute case for the L1 ?
At present I'm using an adapted Pentacon Practika SLR case, 'practical' but
cumbersome.
Are there any of those 'Benser?' soft leather pouches for Leicas still around?

The Jupiter -8 should work fine on a Canon L1, the only problems are when you set the focus at a close distance setting and at a large aperture. this lens was not made to the Leica 51.6mm standard but to the Zeiss 52.3mm standard. this varies from J-8 to J-8. some forum members have re- shimmed these lenses and their more problematic cousins, the Jupiter-3, to focus well at a large lens opening and at very close focus

As far as the Jupiter -12 , it has much less problems with the 51.6mm vs the 52.3 issue because of its greater depth of field as a 35mm lens, and it smaller max. aperture, f2.8, The only real issue with this lens, is the large rear glass elements that protrude and have a large diameter that on some Canons, rub against the black light baffles inside the camera.
I have used this lens on Canon VTs which are very, very similar to the Canon L1
and on the Canon P with no problems. You can check your J-12 on the L1 by hold the shutter open on B and slowly screwing the lens on the camera body, seeing if the side of the lens glass hits the baffles, from the open back of the camera.
As far as camera cases go, I found that the bottom part of a Zenit E case can be modifed to fit a Canon P, ie: the 1/4" screw in the case does not line up 100% with the camera !/4" bottom hole, and some case leather has to be cut for the L1 eye piece position, but it will be better than a Praktica ERC. I hope all this helps.

Hi,
IMHO, there shouldn't be a problem with the J8's. Ithink the contax/leica issue is a red herring and the real reason is manufacturing tolerences and the result of "tabletop" repairs. All of the J8's I have serviced have worked well on both Canon's and Bessa's. Never tried a J12 but the rear element can be an issue and can vary between lenses.
